There's nothing wrong with pointing it out. I'd really like to get to a point where we're not doing so. That said, I don't think either guy was hired to fill a quota or just let the school tout that we hired minorities. Both men have impressive resumes. A big reason I like both hires is because of the coaching schools they came up under as well. Heath under Izzo and Taggart under the Harbaughs.

Great thing about sports is that its easy to judge someone based on their performance. If Taggart gets us a few 10 win seasons and builds on that over the next several years, everyone will be talking about his wins and ability, nothing else.

Talk about taking it out of context. Vega is proud of the fact that our university is willing to hire leaders regardless of race and your killing him for it. Nice!

Exactly, while I don't care what color our coaches are, there's no need to hammer Vega on it. Unfortunately, it still is significant, even if you are like me and it makes no difference to you.

Agree that it shouldn't matter...but it still does to a lot of people. And people's perceptions can be important for lots of reasons. I think Vega's sentiments are just telling it like it is...no reason to bash him.

in a current era of an African American president (Obama) shows how far some minorities groups have ascended.

does this mean Taggs will indefinitely detain players and drone strike opponents?

HELL YEAH!!

Make true headlines and have both coached by Arabic women. The only thing that counts about a person is who they are as a person, not their genetic/ethnic/religous make up.

Taggart was not hired because he's Black. saying otherwise is an insult to his capacity as a head coach.

he was hired because he turned a program that recently moved up from D1AA, was 0-12 before him, and made them a solid program... with virtually ZERO recruiting budget, ZERO tradition, and a bunch of 1 and 2 star players.

his race was not the reason for his hire. at all. if it was, Woolard would never have hired the whitest man on earth three years ago, and probably would have hired a Hispanic coach (e.g. Cristobal) to latch onto the fastest growing "minority" community in the country.

Taggart was hired for his potential, his ability to do more with less, his connection to USF via Blackwell, his NFL pedigree, and probably as important as anything his connection to the Bay area. PERIOD.

that doesn't mean people like Vega and others can't make an observation about the historicity of his hiring. it also doesn't mean we should ignore the POSSIBILITY that cultural background may add another dimension of relatability between a coach and players who come from very similar backgrounds as he does, both regionally AND ethnically. i know most of the USF grads here are accountants or business professionals in fields that have NOTHING to do with behavioral sciences, but to deny that black americans have a unique and distinct culture of their own that INCLUDES regional diversity is anthropologically and sociologically incorrect. very few ppl would have a problem if the observation were made that Lelo Prado could give USF an edge in recruiting talent amongst Caribbean Hispanics (there are Puerto Ricans and Colombians on the team), why is everyone so reluctant to acknowledge black culture the same way?

that said comparing Taggart to Obama is unfair. not only because Obama is a horrible president and we don't need a horrible coach, but because attributing his hire to "the age of Obama" is demeaning to him and his accomplishments as a professional. u can also bet your ass that if he fails as a coach, he will be held accountable. there will be no one who shouts "racism" every time he is criticized for failing to call a timeout before halftime, or if (god forbid) he strings together multiple 1 or 2 win seasons in conference.
