Syracuse football linemen Justin Pugh and Zack Chibane claim Orange lobster mark Published: Monday, July 30, 2012, 10:43 PM Updated: Monday, July 30, 2012, 11:21 PM By Nolan Weidner, The Post-StandardThe Post-Standard closeDigg Stumble Upon Fark RedditShare Email Print Photo courtesy of Donna RahmeJustin Pugh and Zack Chibane show their loaded plates during the annual Big East media day clambake at Fort Adams State Park in Newport, R.I. Newport, R.I. -- Justin Pugh and Zack Chibane could have kept eating for quite awhile, they said. But the two Syracuse University offensive linemen, on a quest to eat more lobsters than anyone who'd ever attended a Big East media day clambake, were done in tonight by - a lack of lobsters. That's right. The Orange football teammates, here to represent their school at the conference's annual preseason gathering, couldn't finish what they started because the pile of lobsters at Fort Adams State Park dwindled to nothing before their sizable appetites did. As it was the two set a new SU record by eating seven and a half lobsters each. They surpassed the old mark of seven, set in July 2008 by former offensive guard Ryan Durand. "We're content, because we did everything we could," Chibane said after the linemates' assault on the record books ended. "We were still going strong." The two apparently missed out on the all-time record. Word is that the same year Durand set his unofficial SU mark, former Rutgers fullback Brian Leonard set the overall mark by consuming nine. "We would've eaten 12 (lobsters) easily," Pugh said. The two, part of a five-player contingent accompanying SU head coach Doug Marrone to the annual event, had planned their consumption in advance. Pugh wrote of Twitter last week that "records will be broken." After each at seven lobsters, they went back to the chow line for more. Finding the large, stainless steel pans empty, they began a search for more lobsters. At one point, a woman offered hers, but Chibane refused to do that. Finally, the clambake cooks found one at the bottom of the fire pit where the seafood feast was cooked. "It was a little burnt," Pugh said. The two took it, tore it in half and eclipsed Durand's record - Pugh consuming the tail and Chibane eating the claws. Pugh and Chibane will share the SU record, likely forever, because the Orange are leaving the Big East for the Atlantic Coast Conference next year. For the record, SU's other representatives ate much less. Receiver Alec Lemon ate two, as did defensive tackle Jay Bromley. Strong safety Shamarko Thomas ate one. The five players' total of 20 also is believed to be a record for team consumption of lobsters. The SU players and Marrone, along with players and coaches from the other seven Big East teams, will meet the assembled media on Tuesday morning to preview the upcoming season. http://blog.syracuse.com/orangefootball/2012/07/post_191.html
