The new tradition at Big East clambake is everyone tweeting lobster pics. Welcome college football season. http://pic.twitter.com/AshVtLVC

Syracuse football linemen have designs on lobster consumption mark at Big East media event

Syracuse, NY -- Syracuse University offensive linemen Zack Chibane and Justin Pugh are two of five Orange players scheduled to be at next week's Big East media day event in Newport, R.I.

The pair apparently has something special planned for the Monday night clambake, which features whole Maine lobsters and has become a noteworthy eating event in itself.

Pugh, a fourth-year left tackle with two year's of eligibility remaining, tweeted two days ago that "Me and @bane75 getting ready for Big East media day. Records will be broken."

Chibane, a senior left guard and Pugh's roommate, retweeted the post, which also included a photo of a large lobster on a sign.

The two, who will be accompanied in Newport by SU coach Doug Marrone, senior receiver Alec Lemon, senior strong safety Shamarko Thomas and junior defensive tackle Jay Bromley, might be preparing an assault on unofficial records associated with the annual event the Orange will leave behind next year when they head to the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The individual SU record is seven lobsters consumed July 28, 2008 by guard Ryan Durand. The overall mark reportedly was upped to nine that same year by former Rutgers fullback Brian Leonard.

The team mark is supposedly 14, set last year by Pittsburgh.

Since the Orange is sending five players, and three of them linemen, that mark appears to be within reach - particularly if Pugh and Chibane get into an individual contest, which seems likely since they're roommates and best friends.

"We compete at anything," Chibane said in an interview earlier this summer.

Chibane recalled a June day when the two were playing a game of "Madden NFL" against one another and didn't speak a word for over an hour.

Other than consuming lobsters on Monday night, the players will all be present on Tuesday morning for media interviews.

Certainly all of them will get questions about this being SU's last season in the Big East.

"Obviously we want to win the Big East. That's our goal. Our number one goal is going to a bowl," Chibane said.

Pugh, a first-team All-Big East selection in 2011, said there's also a matter of trying to beat the three conference teams SU hasn't defeated during the past three years.

"One thing we talk about sometimes is teams we haven't beaten - Pittsburgh, Connecticut and Louisville," he said. "I think we want to make sure we leave our mark on the Big East"

If there's one thing the Big East does right, it's the Clambake (except for when they don't order enough lobsters for the linemen).

This needs to remain one of the traditions of the conference for many years to come.

Well, the one good thing about Syracuse leaving is that there will be more lobsters for everyone. LOL

They'll probably need to alternate between the clambake and BBQ's on a Dude Ranch as the conference evolves and the Media Day is maybe moved to accommodate the distant cousins.

I think the Pac 12 had their media day in NYC, last time.

A rib or steak eating contest in Texas could be fun!
