USF to announce 'music icon' to usher in new Sun Dome

By TBO.com | TBO.com

TAMPA

University of South Florida officials have set a 10 a.m. news conference today to announce a "music icon" who will perform as part of the Sun Dome's grand opening.

Officials say the concert will take place Sept. 14.

The arena, which has undergone a $35  million top-to-bottom renovation, was unveiled during the USF graduation ceremonies last month. New features include seating for 10,000 for basketball games, larger seats in some sections, wider concourses, improved amenities, and a state-of-the-art video board.

Officials are hoping the improvements allow it to become a venue that could rival the Tampa Bay Times Forum and the 1-800-Ask-Gary Amphitheatre at the Florida State Fairgrounds in attracting concerts and other events.

This will be the third prominent musical act to be booked at the Sun Dome since its reopening.

Florence and The Machine, a pop-rock band that achieved considerable success in Britain before receiving a Grammy Award nomination for best new artist last year, will play the USF Sun Dome on Sept. 25. The King's Men Tour, featuring gospel music giants Kirk Franklin, Marvin Sapp, Donnie McClurkin and Israel Houghton, is performing Oct. 2.

Bob Dylan? He's played there before and hasn't been to Tampa in a while.

I saw him from the sixth row at Curtis Hixon for the Rolling Thunder tour. What a concert!

Bob Dylan was at the Sun Dome in either late 2010 or early 2011. I went to it with my dad some time during my sophomore year.

Side note: They had the new basketball court down...

Nearly identical to the old court, but they added the white and gold outline to the midcourt USF logo. Looks very sharp.
