most teams sign 5 ol every year

no they don't.

with red shirting, over 1/4 of your scholarships would be o-linemen if that were the case.

Coaching rule of thumb is usually a good number is 15 OL on scholarship on a D1 team. Coaches would also rather have it staggered where no more than 3 are graduating each year if possible.  Smazza's numbers are absurd.

most teams have more than 15

oline is a quarter of starters

why didnt we sign jc studs also

Holtz said he wants to build OL depth from the ground up. No reason to bring a guy in for 2 years when u can land good talent, groom them and then they play for 4 years.

Not more than 15 'scholarship' players.  Some schools may have 1 or 2 more, but that's about it, most stick at 15 scholarship (walk-ons not included).  This is a rule of thumb I've been told by a college coach or two before...not a guesstimate.  It has more to do with practice.  After 15 scholarship players you can't put in the time or manpower to coach the kids.  It becomes a point of diminishing return after 15-16 scholarship kids.  Throw in a couple of quality walk-ons and it gets crammed.

Thor bleeds green and gold and is a great leader. His dad, Brian, was an all-american at WVU and played in the NFL.  Shank said that he might play one of the OL incoming freshmen. If so, my money is on Thor.

Samantha Crum and Thor Jozwiak were the students with the most Thunder spirit.

O line must be strong

That's usually why incoming freshmen aren't ready to play right away. Even some OL on our current team aren't yet strong enough.

Also, unlike most OL, Thor has had the benefit of learning proper technique from his dad who still participates in clinics for HS OL.

Shankweiler is cross-training players at different positions to help the depth, and he said there's a good chance that an incoming freshman will crack the two-deep this fall. That means the veterans will have to be really good and the youngsters will have to come along in a hurry. If so, then the Bulls can count on the offensive line as a strength again in 2011.

"We can be one of the best around, I believe," Warren said. "We just have to fix some little things here and there and get better."
