I was wondering why our boys had been running slower this year. The injury bug has slowed them down. Hopefully, they get better in time for summer practices.

Kamran Joyer placed 2nd in the Class 2A state weightlifting finals:

Wesley Chapel's Kamran Joyer (440-pound bench, 325 clean and jerk, 765 total) came up 5 pounds off Fort Walton's Akeem Spence (425-pound bench, 345 clean and jerk, 770 total), who claimed the heavyweight title.

"I am kind of surprised," Joyer said. "I thought I would be able to come out here and come in first, but I just didn't get it done. I was kind of upset but at the same time happy because I know him (Spence) personally."

Copincidentally, USF had offered DT Akeem Spence who signed with Illinois.

I would have liked to have seen what Steven Jacques could do against them. He bench presses 420 and squats over 600. Leavitt has singled out Jacques as the freshman OL to play this year.

-- Leavitt mentioned signee Steve Jacques on Tuesday as a possibility to play this fall, the only incoming linemen he mentioned in that context after junior college transfers Carlos Savala and Jamar Bass. "He's physically strong enough, benching about 420 right now, has good strength," Leavitt said. "He's about 310 pounds, about 6-4, real good wrestler, has leverage. I think he might have a chance as a freshman to play a little bit as a backup. (At guard?) Probably, but we're going to snap him (at center) a little bit."

Looks like Kayvon and Derrick are now pretty healthy.

Kayvon ran a 10.69 in the 100m at FHSAA 2A Region 4, placing second.

Kayvon Webster ran a 21.62 in the 200m at FHSAA 2A Region 4, placing first

Derrick Hopkins ran a new season best time of 10.65 in the 100m at FHSAA 2A Region 4, placing first.

Derrick Hopkins ran a new season best time of 22.06 in the 200m at FHSAA 2A Region 4, placing third.

Sterling ran a 48.63 in the 400m at FHSAA 2A Region 4, placing second.

Kayvon, Sterling and two other monsignor pace runners won the 4x100 relay race in 41.87. Perhaps, they are saving Hopkins to run in it at the State championship.

Sterling was also part of the winning 4x400 relay team.

Monsignor Pace's Derrick Hopkins competes in boys' 100 meter dash during the Region 4-2A track and field championship held at Belen Jesuit on Saturday, April 25, 2009. Hopkins won the event.

Pace boys win district track title

BY ANDRE C. FERNANDEZ

Monsignor Pace's boys' track team is operating at full strength again.

And that might not be good news for any team competing at next week's state meet in Winter Park.

With senior sprinter Derrick Hopkins back from a hamstring injury that kept him out of most of the season, the Spartans secured the Region 4-2A boys' title Saturday at Belen. Pace edged the host Wolverines 120-101 as Hopkins won the 100 meters in 10.65 seconds. Ransom Everglades was Dade's best finisher on the girls' side, finishing fifth.

Pace senior Kayvon Webster won the 200 meters and helped the vaunted 400-meter relay team run its best time of the season (41.87), along with Issac Dixon, Jeffrey Allen and Sterling Griffin. Gamy Cilien (high jump) and Martin Maycock (discus) also won individual titles for Pace.

''We still feel like we can do better, but with everybody back, we feel like we can bring it home this year,'' Allen said.

REGION 4-2A

• Boys' team scores: 1. Monsignor Pace 120; 2. Belen Jesuit 101; 3. Fort Lauderdale Archbishop McCarthy 96; 4. Belle Glade Glades Central 48.5; 5. Key West and North Broward Prep 47; Other Dade teams: 9. Ransom Everglades 26; 10. Gulliver Prep 23; 11. Mater Academy 12; 13. Edison 10.5; 16. La Salle 6.5.

Good ATHLETES make for a good football team.

wow, mama bull thanks for tracking all this down.  Really great stuff.

You get to see how much of a freakish athlete Kayvon Webster truly is and why Leavitt made a fuss about him.  We're talking about a kid that is 6ft, with very legit 4.4 speed, he's stout, and has great agility.

BTW, Kamran Joyer can max bench up to 450lbs, his competition bench of 440lbs is pretty amazing when you consider the technique needed to compete. Do you realize at that weight Kamran would have ranked in the top 5 bench pressed on our team last year, and probably will rank there when he arrives this fall.  Having powerful, brutish mauler type guards coming in like Joyer and Jacques will really show up in about a year or two.  The guys ahead of them will really need to push because those two guys have very good athleticism, size, power...and are freakishly strong.  Kamran dropped weight, he's ready to go coming in just over 300lbs.
