Hopkins, Webster 1-2 in state 100-meter finals

Just how fast are the three Miami Monsignor Pace football players coming to USF this fall? Derrick Hopkins and Kayvon Webster finished first and second in the Class 2A state track championships on Saturday night, with Hopkins running in 10.64 seconds and Webster close behind at 10.82.

Then Webster, Hopkins and Sterling Griffin were part of the Pace entry in the 4x100 relay, which not only repeated as state champions, but won with a state-record time of 40.54 seconds.

And a big thanks to my friend and colleague, Times writer Izzy Gould, who is covering the event and took time to track down Webster, talk to him for two minutes and e-mail me the audio file for the blog.

"That's what we've been working for all season. We're trying to break a record," Webster said after the winning relay.

Hopkins wasn't done, winning the 200-meter final in 21.39 seconds, with Webster taking third in 22.01. Griffin took second in the 400 meters, running in 48.63 seconds, and there's still the 4x400 for Griffin. Pace is on its way to a state championship, led by a trio of future Bulls.

"It's going to be a movie when we come to USF," Webster said. "USF's going to be turned upside-down."

I remember when CJL said that HIS Pace boys would break 41 seconds in the 4 x 100 relay this year. They had come close to doing that in 2008. Only three other HS teams in the country have done that this year, and their time of 40.54 blows them all away. I bet the Deerfield Beach team is really pissed off, but they'll have a chance to try and beat that this coming week, but I don't see that happening. LOL

You can watch many of the races including, the 100m victory of Derrick Hopkins, the record setting 4x100 relay and the come from behind victory of the Pace 4 x 100 relay team, the team award ceremony and a GREAT interview by the members of the 4 x 100 Pace relay team. Sterling Griffin is wearing a USF hat and there were a lot of GO BULLS shouted out by all of them. According to their coach, all FOUR guys are going to USF. If that's true, then Jeff Allen will be committing as well. They plan on running a few more meets and their coach thinks they can do even better and run a 40.39. BTW, there are a some other players on their FB team we are recruiting including OT, John Ragoo (Ht: 6-6 Wt: 320), who could really help us out.

Pace boys' track team dominates the night

BY ANDRE C. FERNANDEZ

a1fernandez@MiamiHerald.com

ALEX KOLYER / FOR THE MIAMI HERALDPace's Derrick Hopkins won the boys' 100- and 200-meter events at Saturday's Class 2A meet.

The Monsignor Pace boys' track and field team didn't go to Orlando to go to Grad Bash at Universal Studios.

It went to Winter Park to break records and win state titles.

On Saturday night at Showalter Field at Winter Park High, the Spartans did both at the Class 2A state championship.

Led by its 400-meter relay team that broke an 11-year state record and ran the fastest time of any high school team in the nation this year, Pace won its first-ever state track championship.

''It's been a three-year process,'' Pace coach Pearson Sutton said. ``The kids have been training hard and remained focused. The memory they wanted to have was to end their senior year with a state title.''

Junior DeAndre Johnson began the Spartans' big day, by winning the shot put with a throw of 54 feet, 10 inches to help Pace score 20 points in the field events and keep itself near the leaders. The Spartans rolled to victory after impressive performances in the running events to finish with 82 points to finish 35 ahead of runner-up Tampa Jesuit. Belen Jesuit was the next highest Miami-Dade team, finishing fifth. Pace also was the top Miami-Dade team in the girls' competition with nine points. The Spartans were led by sophomore Mia Mike's third-place finish in the discus.

The Spartans' boys, a team made up mostly of athletes from its football and basketball teams, didn't want to end the school year without at least one state championship in a boys' sport.

''If we hadn't have won it, we wouldn't have never felt worse,'' Pace sprinter Derrick Hopkins said. ``We had to win it. We didn't give ourselves a choice.''

Pace's 400-meter relay team, which has been the foundation of a team that steadily improved over the past three seasons, won its third consecutive state championship.

Hopkins and senior teammates Sterling Griffin, Jeffrey Allen and Kayvon Webster took it a step further by running a national-best time of 40.54, which broke the previous state record of 40.60 set by Lauderdale Lakes' Boyd Anderson in 1998. Pace capped the event with a championship in the 1,600-meter relay. In that race, Allen and Griffin teammed up with junior Issac Dixon and freshman William Bodden to run a victorious 3 minutes, 20.61 seconds and edge Dunnellon's team (3:20.83).

Hopkins -- who along with Griffin and Webster have signed football scholarships to play at the University of South Florida -- was the catalyst in the Spartans' major victories after returning in the postseason from a hamstring injury that kept him out for most of the season. Hopkins ran the anchor leg of the 400 relay for the first time this season Saturday. After Griffin sped past the rest of the teams on the second leg, Hopkins finished it, helping the Spartans run over a second faster than what they did in the event at regionals last week.

Hopkins also won the 100 with a time of 10.64 and Webster followed in second-place with a time of 10.82. That event put them in first place for good. He then won the 200 meters in 21.39 seconds and Webster posted third. Griffin also picked up valuable points in the 400 where he finished second.

Boys' team scores (Top five plus Dade): 1. Monsignor Pace 82, 2. Tampa Jesuit 47, 3. Archbishop McCarthy 42, 4. Tallahassee Godby 40, 5. Belen Jesuit 31; Other Dade teams: 40. Ransom Everglades 4.
