...how hard would it have been to hold off kickoff for 1 minute to pay tribute to one of your fallen players? Did UCiF's administration do this on purpose in order to thwart ESPN's coverage? Is O'Liar going to use the kid's death as motivation against USF next week?

The sheer incompetence in your athletic department in terms of handling this entire situation should be a case study in business school about how NOT to handle public relations.

Miscommunication thwarts moment of silence for Ereck Plancher

posted by Iliana Limón on Aug 31, 2008 5:13:54 PM

UCF was supposed to have a moment of silence in honor of Ereck Plancher, the 19-year-old wide receiver who died following an offseason workout, before the Knights' game Saturday night against South Carolina State. Opps. It didn't happen. It turns out the marching band played too long before the game and the moment of silence was scrapped from the pregame script.

The school did do two other tributes to Plancher. UCF players wore stickers with his initials on their helmets and Plancher's initials will be displayed on the field of Bright House Networks Stadium all season.

It would have made sense to delay kickoff for a few minutes to squeeze in the moment of silence because the game was not on TV. UCF also could have taken care of it during halftime because festivities on the field were canceled due to rain. Instead, school officials said they will have the moment of silence before the South Florida game Saturday.

ESPN's "Outside the Lines" was on hand to film the moment of silence and other tributes to Plancher. Mark Fainaru-Wada, one of two reporters who spearheaded investigative reports of the Barry Bonds and BALCO scandal, is the ESPN reporter working on the story. He was at UCF postgame interviews with a camera crew and asked Coach George O'Leary about the tributes to Plancher. Fainaru-Wada also asked several players about how they are honoring Plancher this season. ESPN crews were filming on campus last week and are expected to be around this week leading up to the USF game that will be broadcast on ESPN2.

I was a little confused during the game.  I knew the MKs entered the field late.

Maybe they can do it this week especially with Mo Plancher and family in attendance.

Huh?  Whaa?  You do realize that your team average 3.1 ypc against a 1-AA opponent?  Our team averaged 6.1 against a very similar 1-AA opponent?  Despite what some UCF guys think averaging under 4ypc is not good in college football.

Maybe the sacks could be attributable to Greco, but the 5 QBH's too?  A QBH is only recorded if someone is touching the QB or knocking him down immmediately after the throw?

Also, another concerning stat if you're UCF is 9 completions by Greco and average 10ypc.  That might sound good, but when you take out the one 30 yarder to Ross it was more like 7ypcatch.  That's not good or comforting.  From these stats your OL is still working on gelling and for the most part UCF's passing game relies on underneath dink and dunk stuff.  Hell we didn't even try to go vertical and Grothe threw 6 completions for 98 yards.  Nothing longer than 20 yards either, but that's a 16 .2 ypc average.

From everything I heard, UCiF had a 3 hour long moment of silence in honor of EP between the hours of 6 pm and 9 pm Saturday.  :D
