Grothe Continues To Confound His Critics

TAMPA - After University of South Florida QB Matt Grothe delivered comeback victories in the Bulls' first three games, critics waited patiently for the redshirt freshman to falter.

At last check, they were still waiting.

Grothe, who was recognized by ESPN.com as the Big East Conference's biggest surprise, has completed 63 percent of his passes (104-for-165) for 1,388 yards and nine TDs. He also leads USF with 460 yards and seven TDs rushing. Grothe leads the Big East and is 12th nationally in total offense with 264 yards per game.

"Matt's a special player. He's been good to us [receivers] spreading the ball out," said receiver Amarri Jackson, who is tied for third on the team with 15 catches for 196 yards and one TD. "And he gets some plays made with his feet, also. Anytime you have a special player like that you want to be able to use him in the best way."

BIG EAST BENEFITS: When college coaches go through their sales pitch to potential recruits, they all look for an edge. Since joining the Big East before last season, USF has enjoyed advantages it didn't have in Conference USA.

"If you're in a BCS conference it's going to help your recruiting and give you an edge," Bulls coach Jim Leavitt said. "I think if you're in the BCS you're always going to have a chance at doing a little bit more recruiting than the other conferences."

Who are Grothe's critics?

After poor to barely average USF QB play for the past 4 years...who the heck could criticize what Grothe has done in his first year?

Title of article makes no sense....Grothe critics? Where? Who?

Theres always people who dont agree with freshman quaterback as a starter....due to experince......

I agree about the whole "where are these critics?" thing -- who has criticized him at all and what would they have to criticize if they did?
