Former QB Hill rethinks place

By GREG AUMAN, Times Staff Writer

Published October 4, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TAMPA - The emergence of USF redshirt freshman Matt Grothe as a star quarterback has former Bulls passer Carlton Hill, playing at a junior college in Mississippi, rethinking plans to return to USF in January.

That Hill would not make it back to USF isn't entirely shocking, given the academic and off-field problems that led to his transfer to Pearl River Community College. He's still considering a return to Tampa, but what's interesting is that he has also talked to schools that would have him lining up against the Bulls.

"If Central Florida is going to play me at quarterback, I'll go," said Hill, who has played exclusively at receiver at Pearl River. "Most of the schools are saying receiver, and I'm pretty much open. I know I really want to get back to playing quarterback. Where at, I don't know. I'd take Miami over anybody."

Hill said he also has talked with Kansas State, Marshall and South Carolina and said if he returned to USF, "I don't see myself playing anything but special teams," recognizing the young talent the Bulls have at receiver.

The only schools that have expressed an interest in him playing quarterback, he said, are I-AA schools like Alcorn State and Alabama State.

To go anywhere but USF, Hill needs an Associate of Arts degree, which he could have as early as next summer, with two years of eligibility remaining.

Great stuff today Greg!

There is no way C. Hill is going to UCF, O'Leary would never take a person of his character! Hasn't he smoked hippy lettuce? ::)

I think he is underestimating his abiity at WR ... we lose 2 SR's and think he would definately be on the 2 Deep.

C Hill go away and stay away....  "I'm pretty much open.....I want to play QB."  This guy is not even playing QB at Pearl River...   Just my opinion but I think he should and would do anything the Bulls want him to do when he comes back....  He will be a cancer to this team and if his "ME FIRST" attitude does not change... STAY AWAY!

CHill had a lot of talent and he'll be a very good WR. I'd take him back, but it sounds like he doesn't want to come here.

A lot of his problem coming out of HS was the fact that he wanted to play QB, and most schools had him as a WR.

QB must be an addictive position.  Kid can't see the writing on the wall.  His greatest chance to get in "The League" is at WR.  Carlton, get your AA & go find a BCS team that will play you at WR.  It's your best bet for keeping you playing future alive.   However, Grothe vs C.Hill in O'town is an intriguing matchup.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
