Serious question.  Are there any other ADs in the country that have the title of Vice President of Athletics?  What in his resume warranted that title?

You know there is this website you might have heard of, called "Google", that you can use to search for that?  😉😉😉😉  (sorry, had to be snarky)

Yes, there are dozens of them... from smaller schools up to schools like Duke and Rutgers and Arkansas and Houston

So what in his background warranted that title?  He never ran an athletic program before.  You would think that someone that gets the title of VPA would have at least shown competence as an AD at another school before getting the title of VPA.

Not necessarily... the VP title is the name of the position now.  If/when Kelly leaves, the next person will be VP of Athletics as well.  It's about the job not the resume.

Andrew Goodrich (former USFer) is the VP of Athletics at Gardner-Webb, which is his first gig as a full AD anywhere.

You might ask, what in his background warranted being named AD at one of the 100+ largest universities in the nation.  That would be a fair question to ask (although more realistic back in 2018).   Although I would say his resume fits with a Vice President-level role - after serving as COO of the CFP and Associate Commissioner of the ACC.

Most likely when Harlan left, USF decided to change the title to get a different caliber of candidates.

This is one I actually understand, someone that is at the c level in their organization isn’t going to take a title of director and while there is likely no difference in anything other than the title it looks like a pretty big drop on your CV.

I highly doubt you will attract any better candidates by the title change but it’s completely understandable why we would accommodate a title change for someone coming from the c level in their organization. That’s a pretty normal concession and the meaning of titles like vp and director tend to wildly differ from one organization to another.

This has a lot of different meanings but I'm not sure which applies here.
