Well we didn't really have the pitching depth to take the losses. The key loss though was Hoffman, who looked good in his short season and probably would have established himself as the closer. King could have been good for us as well. His ERA might have been high but when you look at his numbers, he pitched in 23 games and over half his ER came in two of them . He also notched 30 strikeouts in 25 IP.  All of this in his first season at D1. He would have at the very least been a veteran reliever for us. Offensively, although much weaker than last season, we are missing Dutka. He hit .299 with 17 2B and 26 RBI's. He would probably be a top of the order guy for us while also allowing for Sullivan to be a DH/ Sunday Catcher.

Does all of this account for a lot, Not really, but we have lost 5 of 10 games by one run. We haven't really needed a lot, just an extra play or an extra quality IP here and there to change the whole outlook of this season.

The pitching is thin, but the offense is really the issue. There are lots of holes in that lineup and very little power if Genord isn't hitting bombs. We had six guys hit over .300 last year. Right now, it's just Phillips and Genord.

Missing Dutka hurts, but losing arguably your best 2 hitters and definitely your best 2 starters hurts as much or more.  We weren't sure where they were going to find those numbers.  It's still early and there is time for the youngsters to develop and help us finish strong.

Genord was also hitting over .360 before this weekend and Bodrato was over .300, if they get back on track we could see a big differnece in the offense. Zech has started to trend upwards but probably needs to hit at the bottom of the order.

I was so into USF baseball last year. But this year there is nothing there for me for some reason. Hope they can get back on track but it looks like a lost year.

And I'm not terribly optimistic about next year either.
