Baseball is weird. The "little" schools that get to Omaha seem to all come from places that don't have big time football siphoning off their focus and money. Fullerton, Coastal Carolina, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, Stony Brook... Obviously, the big guys have enough money to go around, but the guys in the middle like us, just don't seem to be able to get over the hump.

No. 24 Bulls’ Impressive Season and Regional Run Ends Sunday

USF fell to Oklahoma St. in the elimination game Sunday, 6-1; Bulls made it three NCAA Tournament appearances in four seasons

DELAND, Fla., JUNE 3, 2018 – The USF baseball team led early and battled, but saw its strong season under first-year head coach Billy Mohl come to an end in the DeLand Regional with a 6-1 loss to third-seeded Oklahoma St.

The Bulls (36-22-1) finish the year with 36 wins and a 14-9-1 mark in The American. USF earned a spot in its 13th NCAA Tournament and second-straight as a No. 2 seed. Six Bulls garnered all-conference selections and the team was ranked in the top-25 of at least one national poll for the final eight weeks of the season.

USF jumped in front of the Cowboys (31-25-1) in the second inning after a two-out double from junior Kyle Phillips (Orlando). In the next at-bat, classmate Garrett Zech (Naples, Fla.) laid down a bunt single, and the throw to first went into the outfield, allowing Phillips to score.

Oklahoma St. scored two in the bottom of the second. With a runner on first and two outs, a single through the right side was picked up by Zech, who threw to third attempting to get the lead runner, but the ball went to the fence and the Cowboys tied the game. Two hit batters and a bases loaded walk put the Cowboys on top, 2-1.

The Bulls had two base runners on in the fourth, then put two on with nobody out in the ninth. But Oklahoma St.’s starter Jonathan Heasley did not allow much after the second, and ended up going the distance, quieting the dangerous USF lineup.

Key Stats

147 – The Bulls hit their 147th double of the season, having already set the program record for a single season.

6 – Six Bulls had hits in the game.

Notables

  • Phillips was named to the DeLand Regional All-Tournament team, going 5-for-11 (.455) with two doubles and two runs scored.

  • Sophomore righty Collin Sullivan (Randolph, Mass.) went 5.0 innings, allowing only three hits and two runs with four strikeouts.

  • Classmate Carson Ragsdale (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) pitched the ninth and struck out the side. In three appearances out of the bullpen in the regional, Ragsdale pitched 3.1 innings allowing just one hit with six strikeouts and no walks.

Up Next
USF’s season may be over, but the program should have a busy week with the 2018 MLB Draft beginning Monday at 6 p.m. The Bulls are expected to have one first rounder and potentially eight or nine players selected over the course of the next couple days.

That’s what makes them little schools - no football.

If that’s the criteria, take Stetson, Coastal Carolina, and Stony Brook off the list of little schools.

We surely have a lot to be proud of. We had a lot of teams put together really good seasons this year - football, baseball, women's basketball, men's golf, softball, etc.

The problem is, EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM fell flat when the really bright lights came on. We had the talent and experience - especially in football, women's hoops, men's golf and baseball - to be more. None of them got it done in big games or in the postseason when it really mattered. That's the truly disappointing theme to this year.

I agree.  However, in football, our special teams were terrible and it bit us in the ass in Houston (along with 4th and 24) and UCF.  It's something that should have been fixed way before those games.

Obviously we didn't.  But what we did have was good enough to give us good seasons in all the sports mentioned. The biggest disappointment of those mentioned as far as advancing, as much as it pains me to say it, was golf.  With four talented seniors it would have been nice to advance.

We did. Men's golf was good enough to advance. You don't believe we had the talent and experience to win the two football games we lost and go unbeaten? You don't think women's hoops was capable of beating UBuffalo after playing within 10 points of the eventual national champion (Notre Dame) and routing Ohio State? Baseball took a game from UNC, won 2-3 from ECU, was one decent relief effort from beating UF, but was only good enough to squeak out an 11-inning win in a regional against a Hartford team that finished its season FIVE GAMES UNDER .500? The opportunities were there. We didn't take it.

Don't remember who said it, maybe Bill Parcells, but "You are what your record says you are"
