Fernandez Named Coach of the Year, Laksa Scholar Athlete

USF head coach Jose Fernandez was named American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and Kitija Laksa was recognized as the Scholar Athlete of the Year.

TAMPA, MARCH 3, 2018 – USF head coach Jose Fernandez was recognized as the American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, the league announced Saturday morning in a press conference at Mohegan Sun Arena. Kitija Laksa was named the Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Fernandez has been at the helm of the USF women’s basketball program for 18 seasons and has led the team to its sixth-straight 20-win season. Fernandez is the second coach in program history to receive conference coach of the year honors. Trudi Lacey was Sun Belt Coach of the Year in 1989.

Fernandez has turned the USF program into a mainstay in the NCAA Tournament and has his team on the verge of its fourth consecutive appearance. The Bulls are chasing the most wins in program history and are set to become just the third team to record 25 wins.

The Scholar Athlete of the Year is selected by the conference’s Academic Affairs Committee and is presented on the basis of academic credentials and athletic performance.

Laksa is a two-time all-conference first team selection and is a member of The American’s All-Academic Team. Laksa holds a 3.7 GPA and is a psychology major. Laksa is the second Bull in program history to receive the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Courtney Williams was recognized in 2015-16. USF was honored on Friday with the Team Academic Excellence Award. The Bulls had the highest cumulative grade point average in the league.

The Bulls (24-6) will play in the quarterfinals of The American championship Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Fans can catch the game on ESPNU. USF will face the winner of 10th-seeded SMU and 7th-seeded ECU which play in the first round of the tournament Saturday at 2 p.m. Fans can catch the game on ESPNU.

Sounds like a day in paradise for those two!

Connecticut in March isn’t what I’d call being in paradise.

Congrats to both.

Congrats to both.

You also wouldn’t call CJF a good coach.

He’s a far better coach than Connecticut is a paradise.

IMO, the AAC Coach of The Year should be Coach Abe.
