I'm with you on the character thing, I think this means he's willing to swallow a little pride and get to work. And yeah, to these kids (esp a 4*) not getting the start means precious time is ticking in their goal for the next level--that's adversity, "fight or flight", and his choice to fight makes me root for him more, too.
