He didn't have enough money to get who he wanted so he settled for what we already had.  You get what you pay for!

From what I have read, CJL runs the show and that includes the type of offense that will be run.  The offensive skill position players recruited were probably told that the offense would be a "spread" type.  2005 Spring Practice has already come and gone.

It would be a bad move to bring in an OC who would revamp the offense.  It can't be done from now unitl September.

CJL has a plan for the offense and Smith knows how to run it.  The question is, does USF have the QB to execute it?  I think it goes back to what Bien has said, if Denson or another QB is the real deal and plays like Blackwell did, Smith will look like a genius.

Except that Dungy was the one calling the shots as well ... it was his offense, not the OCs.  Dungy was canned because the owners were finally fed up with crappy play selection: run up the middle, run to the side, pass over the middle, punt... repeat.

Like Dungy, CJL is calling the offensive style.  Smith will use CJL's playbook... they will set the gameplan together... but Smith will call the plays...

Truthfully... based on what S Bien has said about the Spring Game... and what we saw last year, I think CJL has tweaked the offense enough.

Let's see if Smith is ready to be the OC of a BCS team.

JL is a defensive man, a good leader puts the right people (and scheme) in place to win games.  If we don't have the personnel, then don't put the square peg in the round hole!

Maybe in light of the newest Pope, Smith is considered a "Transitional OC"?

We are a BCS Conference Member and a rising National Program - we need to act like it (OK, yes, I sound like Coach Devine).

Wasn't this what we saw last year with the Bulls??  Or was that just when "Ol' 3 and Out Banks" was in??

No, last year it went something like this:

1st down... slant pass, over the receivers head

2nd down... WR screen, pass at players feet.

3rd down... draw play.

4th down... punt.

hy-per-bo-le -- exaggeration used to make a point
