USF Names Hiller & King To Coaching Staff

Hiller to serve as co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach

King to serve as quarterbacks coach

Taggart makes staff adjustments for 2016

TAMPA, FEB. 19, 2016  – USF Head Coach Willie Taggart today announced the addition of Darren Hiller and Shaun King to the Bulls’ coaching staff and adjustments within the returning USF staff.

Hiller will serve as co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach while King will serve as quarterbacks coach. Hiller will have oversight of the running game and will share offensive coordinator duties with new Bulls’ wide receivers coach T.J. Weist, who adds the title of co-offensive coordinator and will oversee the passing game.

Current Bulls’ assistant coach David Reaves will now serve as associate head coach/tight ends coach and will work directly with USF’s tight ends while maintaining a role in offensive game planning. David Gilbertson, who served as USF tight ends coach in 2015, will move into an off-field position for the Bulls. Taggart will continue to call the Bulls’ offensive plays and work closely with the game planning of the offense.

“I’m excited to welcome both Darren and Shaun to our staff and look forward to the energy and experience both will bring,” Taggart said. “We took some great strides forward offensively last season and broke several school records. We are not satisfied though, and I am always evaluating where we can get better and reach our full potential. We have a very talented and committed coaching staff and a new mix of energy, enthusiasm and experience to lead our players, and I look forward to seeing the results on the field.”

Hiller brings 21 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Bulls and most recently served as offensive line coach at Cincinnati, helping the Bearcats offense to the No. 6 ranking nationally in total offense (537.8 ypg), three-straight bowl game appearances and the 2014 American Conference championship. He has coached in six bowl games, mentored five NFL Draft picks, and helped guide teams that won three conference championships during his career.

“Darren has been a highly successful offensive line coach for 20 years at the collegiate level and we’ve seen how effective his lines play in our own conference,” Taggart said. “He was a big part of the No. 6 ranked offense in the nation last season and I look forward to seeing what he can do in developing our young offensive lineman.”

In his three seasons at Cincinnati (2013-15), the Bearcats put together the three best offensive seasons in school history, ranking 23rd, 27th and 6th in total offense and 18th, 13th and 6th in passing offense, respectively, in the NCAA. The Bearcats produced more than 5,900 yards of offense every season, passing for 3,900 yards or more and rushing for 2,000 yards or more every season, while averaging 6,370 yards a season. Hiller coached six all-conference players during that time, as Cincinnati competed in the Hawaii Bowl (2015), Military Bowl (2014) and Belk Bowl (2013) and won the 2014 conference championship.

King is a Bay Area native who played six seasons in the NFL, including five with the Buccaneers, and was among the first true dual-threat quarterbacks in NCAA football playing under then Tulane offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Rich Rodriguez.

He most recently worked as an NFL and college football analyst for NBC and Yahoo Sports. King’s previous coaching experience includes serving as assistant head coach coach of Team Tampa 7-on-7, quarterbacks coach for Big County Preps and assistant head coach, offensive coach and quarterbacks coach at Gibbs High School (St. Petersburg).

“Shaun was a highly successful dual-threat quarterback in both college and the NFL and I think he will help take our passing game to the next level,” Taggart said. “I love Shaun’s energy, passion and understanding of the passing game. Our players will really respond to his coaching and he’ll be a great addition to our staff.”

A graduate of Tulane University (1998), King was inducted into the schools’ Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004 and was named the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year in 1998 after leading the Green Wave to a 12-0 record and setting the NCAA Division I-A single-season record for passing efficiency (183.3). Drafted by the Buccaneers in the second round of the 1999 NFL Draft, King went on to pass for 4,566 yards and 27 touchdowns with a QB rating of 73.4 in the NFL. He played for Tampa Bay (1999-2003) and Arizona (2004) during a six-year NFL career. He also played one season for the Las Vegas Gladiators (2007) in the Arena Football League.

Daaaannng. Well, I'm glad to have Shaun, and thankfully he has coach T to demonstrate any moves he preaches. Hate to say it, but he looks like he's had his head out of the game...I hope he makes good use of the training facilities for his health.
