That makes it vulnerable to trustees entrusted with making good fiscal decisions. And the allure of perhaps hundreds of millions that could be used to bolster other academic programs or, perhaps, to finance an on-campus football stadium, is appealing.

Thoughts?

WEDU is this area's main PBS station. WUSF was created to provide class-specific programming, but with the advent of the internet and video streaming, it's been relegated to showing the PBS scraps that WEDU doesn't want to show around Tampa Bay. If the board can get some serious coin from the spectrum auction of WUSF, then sell.

Who here has honestly ever watched it other then possibly it's intended purpose of broadcasting a class? TV is dying, internet broadcasting will eventually take over and anything we currently put on there can be easily done online. Get the money and make other more relevant improvements to the University.

Great points!

If they were broadcast online would she not watch them there?

I guess my point is there are more and more devices casting from computer to TV (Chromecast, Amazon, Apple) and there are some really high quality TV streams done totally online. There will be no need for the TV spectrum at all, in fact it would be better used as a bandwidth spectrum for internet. Check out twit.tv , it is run by Leo from the Screensavers back in the days of TechTV. He has several high quality shows on his streaming site with a full production set now.

given the drop in show broad casting, I'm surprised we haven't considered it to broadcast olympic sports. I mean, why not? At least they'll  be on TV.

Great, give that spectrum to the big corporate giants such as Verizon, AT&T, etc.  I can just see their executives popping champagne bottles and puffing on fine Cuban cigars while some internet addicted hipster is more than willing to give even more of their parents' money to these greedy service providers.

TV airwaves are free.  The only thing you need is a TV and an antenna.  Stop giving away our airwaves to these corporations who use the publics' airwaves for their own profits.

They're competing for the same airspace as WEDU, which has superior programming, imho.  Both stations have to put on infomercials by medical charlatans to help pay the bills.  One is enough for the Tampa Bay area.
