It MUST be for capital improvements that are absolutely necessary to maintain Florida Poly's status as the #1 STEM destination in the country. Just because those capital improvements happen to benefit the adjoining property owned by JDA means nothing. Right? This has been the plan all along.

This has been the plan all along. I've heard this also. The changing demographics makes sense since Lakeland will be the last frontier for the Tampa/Orlando metropolitan merge. UF will not get locked out of the emerging region that's clearly USF and UCF territory in research and science.

Maybe not. However, to believe that that was the "plan all along" is giving WAAAAAYYYY too much credit to JDA. The term 'visionary' is hard to find in his neighborhood. Just like FGCU, the land surrounding the university is held by him and his family businesses (Alico and Atlantic Blue). The value of his land shoots up significantly with a science/research university, a la UC Irvine back in the 1960's. Everything he does seems to benefit his companies and himself, even with the Central Polk Parkway that they're pushing ahead with, you bet that's going right through his holdings.
