USF AD says McCullum will return

By GREG AUMAN

Published March 2, 2006

After not commenting on the issue for two days, USF athletic director Doug Woolard released a statement that basketball coach Robert McCullum would return next season.

SI.com reported Monday a group of USF boosters was lobbying for McCullum to be replaced by former Cincinnati coach Bob Huggins, but that report has been widely dismissed by several prominent boosters.

"To put to rest any ambiguity that may have been caused by reports and innuendos directed toward our men's basketball coach, it is important to set the record straight. . ." Woolard said.

"We are making a break from our normal evaluation procedure to clear the cloud of negativity imposed on this program. ... Robert McCullum will remain our head men's basketball coach next season."Woolard and McCullum spoke Monday night, and Woolard addressed the team during Wednesday's shootaround, reaffirming to them that their coach would return. McCullum said he didn't take the report seriously and tried to keep his team's focus on its two remaining games.

"Initially, I didn't believe it. I thought it was a joke. On one hand, I still think it's a joke," he said. "I was happy with the statement that Doug made, but honestly, there was never a moment I thought I wasn't going to be back."

- GREG AUMAN, Times staff writer

McCollum fired after 4 seasons at South Florida

Updated: March 9, 2007, 6:49 PM ETAssociated Press

TAMPA, Fla. -- South Florida basketball coach Robert McCullum was fired Friday after the Bulls lost 28 of 32 games during the school's first two seasons in the Big East Conference.

McCullum, who had two years remaining on his contract at about $200,000 per season, went 40-76 in four seasons. South Florida lost its last seven games to finish 12-18 this season.

"When I stepped back and looked at the entire past four seasons, I did not see enough progress in our program over that time. I felt like we should be further along," athletic director Doug Woolard said, adding that a search for a successor would begin immediately.

The Bulls spent the first two years of McCullum's tenure in Conference USA. They moved to the Big East in 2005 and lost their first 15 league games before beating Georgetown in the season finale.

This season's highlight was a home victory over then-No. 21 Notre Dame.

I have no inside info to the locker room... I've just had direct conversations with 4-5 players on both sides of the ball that implied the team has quit on the staff.

Have any more insight like why they are quitting on the staff?

****. There is obviously a lot of negativity around the program right now, but I hate to hear things like this. I just saw this tweet from Eatmon too...

Well there is one player who has pretty much given up on holtz and co...I'm sure there are more. I hardly see any desire to play anymore when I watch the games...they aren't having fun

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

Last I checked the scoreboard doesn't have a spot for current bank balance on it.
