Helmet looks like a knight helmet and the shoulder pads look like the knight has been in battle, like scratches. Pretty cool look.

If you watch the game on Saturday against Howard, you will say different.. they look ok in these photos, but live on tv looks bad.. they don't look like scratches, more like fading color from being washed too much.

That's what their meant to be... Also there is inset ribbing on the shoulders to look like armored plates. The helmet has a few scratches pre-made but most of the scratches on the helmet you'll see will be made during games... These battle scars will be made more visible because the helmet is dual layered... Brushed chrome finish on top and matte black on the bottom... Giving each player a unique helmet (which won't be repainted each game thus accumulating scaring as the season progresses) at the end of the season based on how physical they've been... Also the white dandruff like stuff on the shoulders are scratches as well as what's supposed to look like chainmail... There are also swords with blood lines running down each pant leg.... The lettering and numbering is also supposed to look more Gothic...

The black uniform will be worn for the UConn home game (and maybe the Louisville home game at the end of the season if we're playing for the conference title) with all white for away games and all scarlet for home games...

NEW YORK, N.Y. (May 1, 2012) – Rutgers unveiled new football uniforms for the 2012-2013 season today featuring Nike Pro Combat System of Dress technology combined with unique design inspiration that harkens back to the Scarlet Knights rich tradition and history.

The fully integrated uniform system incorporates the latest in performance innovation and design while paying tribute to the school’s long-time mascot and identity as the Scarlet Knights. The team will also strengthen the “Block R†logo popularized during RU’s success on the gridiron.

“The new look for Rutgers Football is a clean, modern style that our student-athletes, recruits and fans will be very impressed with,†said Rutgers Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tim Pernetti. “Nike, along with our football staff did an amazing job of incorporating our history, mascot, and our most valuable asset, the Block R, while designing a uniform that will generate incredible excitement. This was a process that lasted over a year with tremendous input from both Kyle Flood and Greg Schiano.â€

While Rutgers new uniform delivers superior lightweight performance and optimal protection, it tells a story through the new design. Nike worked closely with the university to bring elements of the schools rich Scarlet Knight heritage into a distinguished, modern uniform design by focusing on key elements within the athletic mantra: Chivalry, History and Family.

The historic knights of old were more successful in battle if they had better gear. Similarly the football team believes that the better the uniform, the stronger the player – both mentally and physically. Rutgers spent the last year working with Nike to design the new uniform that harkens back the school’s early football roots in 1869 when they played the very first intercollegiate football game. Since then, Rutgers has built a program that is centered on loyalty and brotherhood. As a Scarlet Knight in medieval times, each soldier lived by a code of chivalry, excelling in arms and always loyal to their brother in battle.

In much the same way, the new uniform features true knight-like designs such as metallic accents and battle “scars†throughout the fabrication. The true knights of old donned more battle scars for battles they had been in and won – which meant they had a uniform that had truly been battle tested. Similarly, the Scarlet Knight’s Nike Pro Combat football jersey features added inset ribbing around the shoulders that are made to look like iron plates, yet also enhance the actual technology of the uniform by providing impact and abrasion-resistant screen print allowing for even less “give†and fewer grab points. The pant stripe comes to a point and features a beveled-edge design much like a sword pant, and ties directly into the knight’s plume on the all-new chrome finish helmet. The uniform also features an all-new knight-driven number and font system specific to the team that features a chainmail texture.

In addition to the new design, this integrated uniform system provides enhanced durability and innovation from the inside out. Additional padding without the bulk offers optimal low-profile impact protection specifically throughout the crucial “hit zone†around the hip area.

The uniform system design also emphasizes improved thermoregulation, including the Nike Pro Combat base layer, which is constructed with fabric selected for its ability to help keep the body cool and wick away sweat – making the uniform, and player, lighter and dryer. The jerseys are made of four-way stretch nylon that sheds moisture. Flywire technology in the collar eliminates two layers of fabric for improved breathability, providing a more stable anchor to keep the jersey in place.
