If Holtz is fired "without cause" -- i.e., for simply not winning enough, etc. -- the buyout for USF is $500,000 per remaining year on his contract. In that sense, the new contract represents another $1.5-million guaranteed to Holtz beyond the contract he had previously signed.

thanks. I was under the impression that his salary was guaranteed. was it the same $500k per year under the last deal?

schools should make their buyout the same as a coach's. I guess coaches have all the leverage now. Hard to believe but that will change in the future as schools budgets continue to get squeezed. it's unbelievable what public universities pay their sport coaches regardless of how much revenue is generated.

His compensation is split into "base salary" of $500,000 and "additional compensation" of $1.5 million. If he's fired without cause, he gets the base salary remaining on the contract.

Why don't they write the contract to include "losing season" as cause?

I think the case for Holtz relies on grades more than anything. Our academics under CJL were some of the worst in the Big East while Holtz's APR team scores keep rising every season. To Genshaft and Woolard grades might seem like a big deal after the choke heard around the world.

Lets not tell half the story. Leavitt took alot of chances on kids that might not make it while trying to build the program. Then with the jump to the BE the Bulls took a big hit on the APR with kids leaving that had no chance of playing. Yes Skip has done a good job with the APR. Now if he can win the BE lets all give him a big Horay - otherwise hasta luego(sp?)
