Was just watching the funeral service and Judy announced that the Board of Trustees has unanimously renamed the facility the "Lee Roy Selmon Athletic Facility at the University of South Florida".

What a great honor.

The new practice facility or the athletics building... or both?

Another honor the Bulls could do for Lee Roy would be to retire his number... while he did not play here it is not uncommon for teams to do this out of respect for someone that aided their sport or program.

Of course if they did this then they would need to create a new removable banner to roll out at Ray Jay for home games... something that says Ring of Honor or something Bull related with a retired number under it.

Kind of like what other teams do with Conference or National title dates and so fourth.

YES

I don't like this.  Also, which number?  He wore 93 in college and 63 with the Bucs.

How can you not like that? The man deserves to be associated with anything USF athletics and especially Football. If a ring of honor is ever created he better be one of the first names to be in it.

How about putting him in the next Hall of Fame Class?

The only person I've ever heard of this being done for is Jackie Robinson. What programs have done it? ... I'm kind of with Apis and not feeling this one. Name all you can after him but I just can't see retiring the number (which one?) of someone who never actually played here.

I agree with the idea of retiring #63 in honor of Lee Roy Selmon.  True, he did not play for us, but he's one of the biggest reasons why we do play now.  Selmon has the vision for USF football and we're living that vision.

As for a banner at RayJay, I think that's the one thing the Bucs might agree to keep up at all times.  Anything honoring Lee Roy Selmon at Raymond James will probably be welcomed and embraced, even if it is green and gold.

Lee Roy Selmon was so big, I could see all the professional sports teams in TB retiring his number.  In other cities, I've never seen a sports figure so transcendent for the whole community, touching people well outside of his sport.  The man was such a huge part of this community.  If ever there was a Mr. Tampa Bay, it was Lee Roy Selmon.

And this was a man who lived up to his legacy and the hype around him.  I was in the room at our Big East conference announcement and he was there.  One of the few people I've been around where you could actually feel a presence about him.  There was a buzz when he walked in.  No doubt that Lee Roy Selmon was a special man.  USF Athletics would not be what they are today without him.  I don't think we would have gotten to the point of investing in improvements like we have without him.  This guy who went to a storied college football school in Oklahoma did so much for a school that has often been branded as "just" a commuter school.  Others have contributed to USF's rise, but the football program has given national awareness to our school and it could never have been what it has become without Lee Roy Selmon.

I agree with retiring #63. I don't care if he didn't play here... he's the reason I get to watch USF football. That in and of itself is enough.

As for a banner.... um there already is one. Selmon's name and number are at midfield... I'm not sure what else is needed.
