Former USF running back Andre Hall has been released by the UFL's Omaha Nighthawks, who start their first season this week.

Hall, who was excused for personal reasons two weeks ago, joined the team just before the Nighthawks signed former Ohio State standout Maurice Clarett. Hall, who holds many of USF's rushing and scoring records, has been out of football since he was cut by the NFL's Houston Texans last year.

Hall's release leaves the Bulls with three players in the UFL -- guard Frank Davis with Las Vegas and receiver Huey Whittaker and safety J.R. Reed with the Florida Tuskers. Whittaker had one catch for 9 yards and Reed had two tackles in the Tuskers' season-opening win against Las Vegas this weekend.

I'm sure this has already been discussed, but what the hell is the UFL?  Is it better than NFL Europe or the replacement for it?

According to the league's Web site, former USF receiver Taurus Johnson is on the UFL Hartford team.

Probably the closest thing would be the old USFL.

It isn't associated with the NFL, like NFL Europe was.

I think its more of a 2nd tier league, cheaper seats, a lot of the teams are in smaller towns where there isnt an NFL team.

The players all seem to be NFL castoffs...it's not the gimmick that XFL was.

If I remember correctly, the original idea was to be kind of a 'post-ncaa' semi-pro league. They were going to stock the teams primarily with local college players who had finished their eligibility, but hadn't made it to the nfl. Somewhere along the line, it appears the philosophy shifted. More's the pity, as the original idea was a good one, IMO.

Its a good league for the players.. Gives them a chance to show they still have it. It leads to a lot of players getting NFL contracts.

Local example is Spurlock played UFL last yr got picked up at the end of season and returned a punt to beat saints. This yr doing pretty good for the bucs as well

what has happened to Andre? He was doing pretty well with the Broncos just a couple of years ago.

And JR Reed....is this guy still messed up from his fence accident? He was pretty impressive with the Eagles for a while, how is he not on an NFL roster?

It was a very serious injury and pretty much ended his chances in the NFL.  He came back a played a few games with the Iggles but didn't stick.

Andre age and size is what happened to Andre.  He is getting older, and just never had the chops to stick in the NFL.  Fell in that in between place, not quite big enough for some rolls, not quite fast enough for others.

JR - Maybe with a season of hard play at Tuskers may find his way back.  If he shows he can handle a full season without injury.  From the reports he was never supposed to walk without a cane again, so amazing he puts on cleats at all.  Even after that the Eagles really tried to keep him on the roster, but he lost in the final cut.  I think teams are a little afraid to take him on and then watch him be unable to play by week three....
