academics...plenty of schollies.  Team can only take 25 new players on scholarship in the fall and we're below that...and we're below 85 total.

Yep would have hated if he hadn't made it and wound up somewhere else. So I was real relieved when the tweet showed up on my phone.

On a related note; have we ever had someone Grey Shirt before?

time out folks...a grey shirt does not mean he made it into USF.  It is impossible for USF to admit him as a full-time student, then he would not be a grey shirt and his clock would start ticking.  Montague is fully recruitable by all other schools now...FYI.  As I've understood he was only admitted as a conditional student to take a few remedial classes that will not count toward his college curriculum, and he must get a certain grade in those 2-3 classes and have perfect attendance.  He also cannot attend anything with the team.

The best this means is that the athletic department and Montague have come to a meeting of the minds that he'd be better off to stick around and wait until the spring to get in...and that his transcripts are close and he just needs to complete x,y, and z to get in.  The good news to this is it seems Jamaal has accepted these conditions and is willing to work for it...but remember he's not in, and he's still fully available for any other school to recruit and sign too (if Jamaal wanted to change).

WR Montague says he'll join Bulls in January

Lake City receiver Jamaal Montague, who signed with USF in February but wasn't academically qualified in time to join the Bulls for fall camp, said Tuesday he's taking classes part-time at USF and will join the team on scholarship in January.

Montague said he is "grayshirting," or deferring his enrollment, and since he's not taking classes full-time, his five-year window of eligibility won't start until January. As such, we'll consider him USF's 11th oral commitment toward its recruiting class of 2011.

USF has dealt with a ton of attrition at receiver this summer, so you would think the Bulls might try to get him out there, but if USF's other true freshman receiver, Deonte Welch, has been out in practice for three weeks and still may redshirt, this might be the simplest solution for Montague to get acclimated to college and join the team in January.

USF coach Skip Holtz was able to bring in a high percentage of his February signees -- if Montague is on campus, that means only two from the recruiting class won't join the Bulls this school year. Running back Mike Hayes was released from his letter and signed with Houston, and running back Tiger Powell did not qualify and is enrolled at Jones County Junior College in Mississippi.
