My family came into possession (through legal means!!!) of a 42 inch plasma tv. They are bringing it my to my apartment today. Apparently they've been letting it sit face down for about a week now (inside, room temperature). Is this TV totally destroyed before I've had a chance to even set it up?

It is in perfectly fine condition except for the laying face down for a week or so.

It is a Panasonic.

You'll just have to plug it in and see.  I have a 42" Panasonic Plasma and love it!

It totally depends on the TV.  I noticed the local Sams had a stack of them sitting face down for a couple weeks.  I didn't say anything, but I did talk my buddy out of buying one there for that reason.

I heard that the screens on those are made of some organic compound and over time can actually rot.

The whole thing about leaving them standing up is mainly to keep them from being damaged during transport.  Even then, it should be fine if it's properly cushioned.

A refrigerator would be a different discussion entirely.

I have heard the same thing. Face down the weight is being put on the outside of the TV where it wasnt meant to be supported and during transport any slight bump or shake could crack the tv.

Good luck with it!

We were loading our plasma at Circuit City and the guy almost had a heart attack when we tipped it more than about 45 degrees.  He said under no condition should a plasma be tilted more than 30 degrees.  He could have just been too geeky an they all had a laugh in the back...I don't know, now I too am curious Econ...when do we get an update from you?
