QB will be the top target next year.  ESPN has listed the top 60 FL HS senior QBs.  Obviously most aren't even worth our time but some we'll go after hard.

Brion Carnes already committed but they'll keep pushing for someone else since he may not even play QB for us.

A possibility is Christian Green from TCHS.

christian green likely wont be playing qb in college... hes got the big boys after him - michigan, USC.  pete carrol was on campus a few weeks ago to see christian

Well maybe, just maybe, Christian will be recruited by USF with the promise* of getting a "look" at QB while USC doesn't promise any such "look".  Subsequently, Green signs with USF and plays QB on the practice squad during his redshirt season.  Then, suddenly*, his sophmore season he "switches" to CB or WR.  ;)  ;D

I'm adding Robert Marve until it's official that he's not coming here ... should know in May.

Future SEC talent to take field in OrlandoSeveral 2010, 2011 prospects to show their stuff

Many of the top signal-callers from Florida and surrounding states will compete at the first Elite 11 regional workout of the 2010 recruiting cycle on Sunday at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Fla. The event is one of seven regional workouts across the country that lead up to the Elite 11 quarterback camp, which is held in July in California.

Florida commit Trey Burton (Venice, Fla.), an ESPNU 150 Watch List prospect and a contender to be the state's top quarterback prospect in this class, has been committed to the Gators since July 31. He is tentatively scheduled to be at the event, provided he does not have a conflict with his high school basketball game. Burton had more than 2,700 yards and 40 touchdowns total (passing and rushing) during his junior season.

Nash Nance (Calhoun, Ga.) recently picked up a scholarship offer from Mississippi State. Many who have watched Nance play believe he has all the tools to emerge as a sleeper -- obviously the Bulldogs were high enough on him to make him an offer. The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder transferred during the offseason from Darlington (Rome, Ga.), where he was part of a Wing-T system, to Calhoun, which runs a spread. Nance has the chance to make some noise with a good showing in Orlando.

Plant High School in Tampa, Fla., is starting to get a national reputation for producing quarterbacks, with former Miami quarterback Robert Marve (Class of 2007) and Georgia signee Aaron Murray (Class of 2009) both showing special qualities coming out of high school. Plant head coach Robert Weiner is one of the top developers of high school quarterbacks in the country, and Class of 2011 signal-caller Phillip Ely could be the next guy in line at the school. The nation will get its first look at Ely, who threw for 1,767 yards and 19 touchdowns last season when Murray was out with an injury, at the workout Sunday.

Speaking of Tampa quarterbacks, C.J. Bennett (Tampa/Alonso) is undersized but has a good arm and a quick release. The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder has drawn comparisons to former Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel, and he will get the chance Sunday to show what he can do.

Brion Carnes (Bradenton, Fla./Manatee) has already committed to South Florida. Many in Manatee County believe the Bulls have gotten a special player. Carnes has more than 3,000 passing yards during his career and will get the chance to compare his skills in the passing game against some of the other headliners.

Jeffrey Godfrey (Miami/Central) and Tarean Austin (Tampa/Hillsborough) are two probable attendees to watch. Godfrey is a player many have been high on since his sophomore year, and the 6-4, 200-pound Austin has a strong arm and a tremendous amount of upside.

Blake Bortles (Oviedo, Fla.) has an early offer from Central Florida and is getting attention from Tennessee and others. The 6-2, 209-pounder threw for 2,400 yards and 23 touchdowns last season.

Other quarterbacks at the event to keep an eye on among the 60-plus who are expected are Marshyl Rothman (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter Christian), Michael Strauss (Miami/Gulliver Prep). Like Bennett, Rothman has size working against him but is highly skilled. Strauss has a good arm as well, and good potential.

Recruiting: Elite 11 Camp

Athlon Sports

The 60+ young men who arrived at Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando, Florida early Sunday morning expected to be greeted with warm sunshine, excellent field conditions, and the opportunity to further their skills in an attempt to become regarded as one of the next highly-touted quarterback prospects to be recruited by a prominent NCAA program out of high school.

Within moments after stepping out onto the grounds, however, it quickly became apparent that only the latter would end up being the case – for once those participating in the first EA Sports Elite 11 Regional Quarterback Camp for 2009 hit the field, they were met with unseasonal low temperatures, gusty winds, and, on more than one occasion, a passing cloud burst.

That high school quarterbacks from throughout the state of Florida and beyond would end up damp and shivering before noon was a foregone conclusion even before the first horn signaling the start of the camp was ever blown.  Yet, such physical setbacks would ultimately be fought through, as even the elements which sent parents and press scattering in all directions to find cover couldn’t deflate the spirits of those who came to learn from some of the best talent in football today, including former University of Florida quarterback Chris Leak and current back up to Tim Tebow in Gainesville, John Brantley.  Feet might slip on the grass, grips might fail to maintain control of the ball, and winds made accuracy futile; still, these young men came to learn and show what they were made of, and nothing – even some bad weather – was going to prevent it.

The two hours comprising the Elite 11 training initially found four stations to which groups of approximately 15 attendees rotated every so often, with each individual quarterback practicing passing accuracy, throwing while rolling out, maintaining the pocket, and hitting receivers in stride under the watchful eyes of instructors who offered both praise and constructive criticism.  That was followed by an extended session of pass route drills executed from three, five, and seven-step drops.

Players were “scored†for their ability to produce at each station, with the individual achieving the highest point total for each stop of the camp then provided the opportunity at the end of the morning to go head-to-head in an accuracy competition for the right to be named overall best performer for the day.  That found names like Brandon Smith of Cardinal Newman (West Palm Beach, Florida) and Quinshon Odom (Lake Wales, Florida) battling strong winds in addition to each other before yielding the day’s festivities to Clint Trickett, son of Florida State’s current offensive line coach, Rick Trickett.

Many were not surprised that Trickett, a lean 6-foot-1, 165-pound junior from North Florida Christian in Tallahassee, Florida, carried the day.  One writer describes him as “very comfortable†either under center or in the shotgun, and impressive in his ability to drop back, look off his initial receiver and provide the opportunity for other wideouts to get open when scrambling.  He has a mean arm and completed 70 percent of his passes out of the shotgun this past season, drawing the attention of schools such as Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Tennessee, Mississippi, FAU, FIU, UCF, and Kentucky.

Other names which grabbed the spotlight on Sunday:

Chandler Carr, Jacksonville, Fla. (Jacksonville Bolles)

A 6-foot-0, 185 pound pro-style quarterback, Carr first made noise last year when starting quarterback Davis Skinner went down with a broken collarbone in the second game of the year versus Orange Park; taking over the Bulldogs’ offense while Skinner healed, Carr led Bolles to six straight wins, going 62-of-99 passing for 981 yards, 11 touchdowns and only one interception during that span of time. As a junior in 2008, he led his team to a Class 2A state title, throwing for 94 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-20 win over Miami Gulliver Prep.  With good size, a strong arm, and impressive mobility, Carr should be one of the elites in 2009, particularly if he avoids having to share the spotlight under center as a senior.

Tarean Austin, Tampa, Fla. (Hillsborough)

Drawing on what TampaBay.com writes was “the best offensive collection of athletes†seen since head coach of the Hillsborough, Earl Garcia, took over the Terriers’ program, Austin, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound dual-threat quarterback, made enough noise as a sophomore in 2007 to attract offers from USF, Wake Forest, and Duke, and in 2008, finished with over 1600 yards passing.

Marshall Rothman, Jupiter, Fla. (Jupiter Christian)

A 5-foot-10, 181-pound junior, a combine observer in Miami commented that Rothman “has all of the tools to be a great one (arm, athleticism, intangibles),†this even though his height has kept him off the radar up to this point.  He is extremely mobile, elusive, and cuts on a dime.  His strength is in running the ball more so than throwing, but he is still a major threat in regards to the latter; for 2008, Rothman threw for 1,476 yards passing and 25 touchdowns while gaining 702 yards rushing.  Rumor is that the University of Kansas is interested in him as they feel he is reminiscent of current Jayhawks quarterback, Todd Reesing.

Brion Carnes, Bradenton, Fla. (Manatee)

From one of the most renowned high school programs in the entire Sunshine State, Carnes is a 6-foot, 180-pound dual-threat type that has started at quarterback every year since starting high school.  With a 4.4 40-yard dash, the junior is extremely athletic and can beat opposing defenses with either his feet or arm.  One scouting report describes Carnes as “one of the elite athletes in Florida for the Class of 2010,†with schools such as Florida State, Clemson, Louisville, and Georgia Tech knocking at his door.  For now, Carnes is committed to USF, but that could change considering the level of recruit under center Jim Leavitt as recruited recently.

Michael Strauss, Miami, Fla. (Gulliver)

A pro-style passer with impressive physical features – 6’2â€, 195 pounds – Strauss had a big year in 2008, throwing for over 3100 yards and 32 touchdowns.  He’s accustomed to operating out of the shotgun, which left him being told by instructors at the Elite 11 that he needs to work on his drop back passing; still, he has a strong arm and showed plenty of zip and accuracy when passing.  Has an official offer from Tulane at this point, but also is getting attention from Mississippi, Vanderbilt, North Carolina, and Auburn.

C.J. Bennett, Tampa, Fla. (Alonso)

Another pro-style quarterback, Bennett is considered by some undersized at 5-foot-11, 189 pounds, but possesses a solid arm and has a quick release on the ball.  Comparisons are already being drawn between the junior and quarterback for the Missouri Tigers, Chase Daniels.

Nick Becker, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (Pine Crest)

A 6-foot-1, 185-pound  junior, Becker threw for over 1000 yards passing and 12 touchdowns in a 6-3 season for Pine Crest in 2008, asserting himself as one of Broward County’s best quarterbacks.

Dylan Parker, Fort Pierce, Fla. (Treasure Coast)

Led the Titans to a 7-3 record in 2008 while throwing over 1100 yards and 11 touchdown; a career-high came against Santaluces, with Parker connecting for four scores in the 52-13 win.

Apparantly, Carnes has now made a FINAL decision to stick with USF, but it's a long way until signing day. I remember when another early USF verbal QB, J Fayson, who was also in love with USF, ended up signing with Florida. Fayson eventually left UF and they wouldn't let him transfer to USF, so maybe Carnes can learn something from what happened to him.

It's interesting that both Trickett and Carnes could be Bulls soon. (Just speculating)

Stephen Morris said his sister graduated from #USF last year. He thought about playing there, but Bulls never showed him any interest.
