Jim seems to think he'll get a medical redshirt.

Isn't Schmidt a senior?  Also, Grant Gregory will be trying to get a medical redshirt, too, right?

Also interesting, Jim, that you are assuming Nate Allen will go pro, too.  I guess that's possible...Selvie would be the only guy I'd assume would leave early, but that's me.  That would make Verpaele's medical redshirt more important.

Nate Allen has been touted as one of the best safeties in the country, I think he could have a good year, test the waters to see where he'll be drafted and be told 2nd or 3rd round.  And I think that will be tempting for him.  I could be wrong, tho...

I thought this was Verpaele's 5th year?  I don't think he'll have any eligibility left after '08, barring another injury.

Verpaele broke his foot before the 2005 season and missed the whole thing.  I think he could argue for a medical redshirt for 2005 saying he took his actual redshirt in 2007 to focus on school.

Any college athlete that REALLY believes they could be drafted in rounds 1-3 shoulda take it in a heart beat. draft picks at 1-3 typically ALWAYS make the team. The GM and head coach look bad if they cut a 1-3 rounder.

In my experience, it is VERY unlikely that the NCAA will grant Verpaele another year since he redshirted in 2007.

The biggest concern in 2009 has to be O-Line.  I really want to see USF sign some 4-5 star linemen who can come in right away and play.  I know the walk-ons have been working hard, but that projected lineup just doesn't give me confidence.

Projected 2009 Starting Lineup -- Based on the Tennessee-Martin lineup and the 3rd stringers from Greg's Blog... lots of young players... and I'm sure there are some true freshmen already at USF or one or two incoming 2009 class that could crack this lineup...

Jim,

Good line-up, but Danny was suspended last year for academics.  The NCAA would never, ever grant a waiver to a kid that had 5 years to play 4 and missed one year because of ineligibility.  They'd see it as your mistake not theirs is how they see it.  Danny created his own hardship this was not an injury situation.  Grant Gregory is going for a hardship and that will likely get denied too, unless he's got amazing proof that his RS year at Indiana was exclusively for injury.

The one guy to me that clearly meets the NCAA guidelines for a 6th year Medical Hardship waiver is Danny Tolley (presuming he doesn't play this year)... He redshirted as a freshman in 05', played in 06' even started a few games, then missed 07' to injuries, and now 08'.  Multiple seasons missed because of injuries.

Another thing is Warren has really been pushing at OL until his injury.  I don't think Hines is ahead of him now.  Also, some JC's are obviously coming in to help.  I noticed you didn't include Quavon Taylor-- is that due to the recent MIA report, assuming he's not going to make it?

You only need 1 year missed from injury to get a medical redshirt.  Danny Tolley could play this year and still get the waiver to play next year.  That alone would give us 3 starter quality players on the line in Hermann, Sims, and Tolley.  Still some work to do, but all season to get recruits and experience for the current guys.

I thought Grant Gregory had the proof for the medical redshirt, but we'll see.  B.J. is playing this year, anyway, and Evan Landi could play next year.  I feel for Grant because I think he could have done well with this offense...

I think Verpaele could get the waiver, too, but we'll see.  I don't think Nate Allen is as likely to leave as Selvie, either.

I think we could be fine next year.  I feel good about QB (obviously), RB, WR, TE (Pupello), FB, LB (McQueen, Joseph, and Kion back...and C-Rob, etc), DT, DE (Bedford, Marshall, etc), and CB.  We'll see what happens with the safeties and OL.

Positions we should be better at next year:  QB, RB, FB, and DT.  We only lose 2 WRs, too, so it's likely, despite losing Taurus and Edwards, that we'll be better there, too.  The other positions listed above I don't expect to lose much at.

Look for us to pitch some real good playing time  to recruits and especially juco o-linemen...we will be able to fill the holes. If this season goes anything how I have it in my head. We could change alot of recruits minds by the end of the season.

But he missed 2005 because of an injury.  So he had 5 years to play 3... after all, don't most people who claim a medical redshirt also have a regular redshirt season -- meaning they missed 2 seasons and not just 1?

I would think Danny's 2005 could be granted, despite his "redshirt" season in 2007.

If we have a stellar year, expect quite a bit of turnover from our commit list.  I believe the coaches are trying to reel in some big fish, bigger than what they've caught so far.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
