If your star RB Kevin Smith was so great, why then did Detroit move up to pick Jahvid(sp?) Best?

I would guess since KSmith tore his ACL?  Might be damaged goods.  Probably just hedging their bets.

This.  Plus, Kevin isn't anywhere near as talented as Best.  He will probably end up like Andre Hall.  A great RB who would love to play, but no chance to play because he's injured or buried on the depth chart.

he blew out his knee and probably won't play all of 2010....if that never happened Best maybe doesn't get drafted by them....the realities of the NFL and nice attempt at a flame but Kevin Smith was one of the sole bright spots on that Detroit roster

To be fair (...I know the USF/UCF bashing is fun but...)

Smith tore his ACL.. will be out the whole season

Plus... Some RB's never fully recover from those types of injuries.

Unfortunately they have to consider him damaged goods and already plan alternatives without him until Smith can prove otherwise

Really heartbreaking for so early in his career.

Even if he wasn't injured, they might have drafted Best.

Most NFL teams are using 2 backs nowadays, so to have a small fast guy like Best complement a bigger guy like Smith would help take more heat off Matt Stafford.

Having just Smith as the primary back in the NFL doesn't work. Too easy to key in on schemes.

Definitely think the ACL spurred the move. Lions already have a couple of other backs averaging more ypc than Smith did so I doubt they use a #1 pick to grab another one if Smith is healthy ....

The guys on this board hating on Smith are weak. . . . . . especially three years after he went pro.

Fact is the kid was an excellent college player. . .who's upright running style gave him great vision and camouflaged his speed.  USF has never had a running back as good as him. . . . . .don't care what you say about Andre Hall.

It is also a fact that he was a productive running back on the worst professional team any of us have seen in our lifetimes (0-16).

To continue to pile on after the kid has a career threatening knee injury (being drafted by the Lions was punishment enough) is simply unbecoming.

Let it go guys.

Actually, picking Best didn't have much to do with Smith. Smith simply wasn't able to carry the load as THE guy.

FWIW, neither is Best. The hope is that a Best/Smith combo complements each other well and should be able to not break down. Neither guy is a 20+ carry back.

Personally, I think Kevin is done, which is a shame. He put too many miles on at UCiF.
