Southern Miss' Bower resigns despite 14th straight winning season

  Nov. 26, 2007

By Dennis Dodd

Southern Mississippi coach Jeff Bower has resigned, CBSSports.com has learned.

One of the longest-tenured coaches in the sport made the decision sometime after the Golden Eagles' season-ending victory over Arkansas State on Saturday.

A school spokesman said Bower and athletic director Richard Giannini had been in meetings all morning.

Bower ended 17 seasons at the school with his 14th consecutive winning season (7-5). The program, though competing against Ole Miss and Mississippi State for the state's best players, was considered one of the best at the non-BCS level.

I wonder why he resigned like that? Is there a bigger program calling for Bower already?

14 winning seasons, but sometimes just barely.  No longer on an upward trend, and not pulling enough upsets of "big boys" was creating some rumbling in Hattiesburg.

I bet Southern Miss has Ed Orgeron on speed-dial after Ole Miss dumped him the other day.

Southern Miss paid him very little, but he had great benefits (house, car, etc.) and his kids went there for free.  He was loved there, and could've stayed there as long as he wanted to.

This is really surprising to me.  Almost reminds me of how Shaq turned his back on Orlando after they gave him the shirt off of their backs.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
