Everybody's forgetting about Arizona State and Kansas. They're still unbeaten, and have a good chance to end up unbeaten, as champions of the Pac-10 and Big 12. If so, they'll pass most of these one-loss teams. Especially Arizona State, since Kansas' overall schedule is highly suspect.

I don't think we need to concern ourselves with the rankings at the moment.  Our only goal at this point in time should be the BE title.

I agree with what you say if you are part of the team.

However, why shouldn't fans worry about rankings and possible scenarios? It's part of what what makes being a college football fan fun IMO.

I just cant understand why people say fans shouldn't worry about rankings and all that kind of stuff.

Seemed fine to talk about it last week when we were #2

i didn't like all the "What Ifs" last week before Thursday, and i don't like them now.

sure, there's nothing wrong with fans dreaming, but it's more constructive to concentrate our collective energies on winning the next game.

all that "national championship" talk created a celestial imbalance in the universe and cost us the game against Rutgers (or maybe it was the refs  ???)

let's focus that energy on UConn, instead of hypothetical scenarios beyond our control.

What makes you so sure? Cal suddenly looks average. USC's not the juggernaut it used to be. UCLA continues to be flaky. Oregon at Autzen will be ASU's toughest test, but it's not unwinnable.

ASU has played nobody, and is barely even undefeated as they kicked a late field goal to beat Washington State.  Their schedule so far:

09/01/07  vs. San Jose State (City of Tempe Night)  Tempe, Ariz.  W, 45-3

09/08/07 vs. Colorado TV Tempe, Ariz. W, 33-14

09/15/07 vs. San Diego State (Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night) TV Tempe, Ariz. W, 34-13

09/22/07 vs. Oregon State (Hall of Fame Game) Tempe, Ariz. W, 44-32

09/29/07 at Stanford TV Palo Alto, Calif. W, 41-3

10/06/07 at Washington State TV Pullman, Wash. W, 23-20

10/13/07 vs. Washington (Family Weekend/Champions Weekend)

The rest of it:

10/27/07  vs. Cal (Homecoming) TV  Tempe, Ariz.  7:00 p.m. PT

11/03/07 at Oregon TV Eugene, Ore. 3:30 p.m. PT

11/10/07 at UCLA Pasadena, Calif. TBA

11/22/07 vs. USC TV Tempe, Ariz. 6:00 p.m. MT

12/01/07 vs. Arizona (Senior Day) TV Tempe, Ariz. 6:00 p.m. MT

No way they make it through that schedule unscathed.  Personally I think they will be lucky to win 3 of those 5.  Just give it a couple weeks.

If WVU wins out, USF wins out, and another series of fortunate top 5 upsets occurs... Is it possible for WVU to be ranked high enough (ahead of USF) to be selected to play for a national title, and not win the Big East? (USF wins the tie breaker)

Wouldn't that just screw up everything? Or would the BCS intervene and somehow shut out WVU?

IF both USF and WVa end up with 1 conference loss, then USF would be the BCS rep no matter the BCS rankings. Both teams would be BE Champions, but USF would have the tiebreaker over WVa. BCS rankings only apply if more than two teams have the same conference record. IF both USF and WVa win out, then no other BE team would have less than two losses.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
