JUPITER -- Police arrested St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol, a misdemeanor, after he was found sleeping at a green light in his running Ford SUV about midnight today at Frederick Small Boulevard and Military Trail.

Police grew suspicious when the SUV was stopped at a light that went through two cycles of green and a driver behind it had to go around, police said.

Police found La Russa slumped over in the driver's seat of the running SUV, which was in drive and running. La Russa had his foot on the brake and did not respond to knocks on the window, police said. He finally woke up and parked the car.

Police said they noticed the smell of alcohol on his breath, and a field sobriety test was conducted.

La Russa was sent to the Palm Beach County Jail, where he provided breath samples, which measured at a .093 blood alcohol level, police said.

The BAC level is too low and needs to be raised to 0.10 at the minimum. LaRussa was more fatigued than drunk IMO... but now it makes headline news for it. Even he hadn't hurt anyone, why can't the cops pull the car over to the parking lot, get him a hotel room, and tell him to get his keys at the station the next day. It's all about money though for the court system.

You'd be a good spokesperson for that cause...

Obviously, you don't know anyone that has been killed by a drunk-driver or if you do, you just don't care.

Well that is important news.  ;)  Since everyone has voiced their concern for the beloved alumnus (who I seldom see involved with USF), we'll move this a board better suited for the St. Louis Cardinals manager.

More highway deaths are caused by drivers with .01-.03% BAC than .08 or .09 (1.7% to 1.4% according to the NHTSA). Of course, 76% are caused by sober drivers.

MADD is petitioning Florida to lower the DUI number to .05%, btw, and word from Tallahassee is they're in favor.

The drunk driving is preventable.  The idiotic driving, unfortunately, isn't.  Lots of accidents happen because of fatigued drivers also.
