"WE" is absolutely correct for fans to use when referencing their team. It means the fan has a vested interest, and emotional tie in rooting for the team.

We give money, we buy the product, we support our athletes, we are alumni.

Is there an egotistical 'we' ? If so than I have it.

Interesting topic.

My take.  If you are talking about your school's team then "we" is appropriate.

If you never attended the school, taught at the school, don't donate to the athletic program, then you may be a fan, but you are not authorized to use the word "we" when referring to the teams.

Pro teams, I don't like the term "we" but I even slip up and use it sometimes.  I would say probably no to "we" with pro teams.  Unless you feel like me and the home teams are an extension of the city you "LIVE" in and that they represent your community...then we is probably ok.  i.e. in Tampa Bay you can use "we" when referring to the Buccaneers, Lightning, Devil Rays, and Storm.

If you are supporting an out of market team...I.E. the Yankees or Red Sox and living in Tampa Bay, then Hell no you can't use the term "we."  You give up that right when you chose to leave that other city.  If you've never lived in that city then you are a bandwagon fan with no civic pride and should have your ability to watch sports revoked.

To say we is to put more than just one person in the picture.  We are fans, alumni, students, boosters, etc.  We support the team(s) with our presence and passion.  WE is definitely a great way of getting the point across that USF is our team.  We are part of the Bull Nation, the USF family.

I've been having a debate with someone about the use of the word "we" when refering to a team.

He argues that fans cannot say, "WE won our first bowl game", because WE the fans did not play. All we did was pay and watch. He also says that fans say "we" so that they can feel included and important.

I argue that when a team wins, it is for the University, and that we are all part of the University, therefore WE won the game. We are the 12th man. Yes the team won it on the field, but the University won.

I wanted to see what other people thought about it.

I don't beat around the bush. Whoever said that is an idiot.

'We' are all USF Bulls. Some play football, bb etc. Others are students, alumni, and/or support the university. Without eachother, 'we' wouldn't exist. It's not even a debate.
