Long story short - when I was doing the BullsEYE magazine, I wrote a column after the San Diego State game when we made the switch quickly at QB from Glen Gauntt to Marquel Blackwell. The crux of the column was that, yes, they had the right guy as the starter in Blackwell, but I questioned how the whole thing played out. Gauntt sat behind Chad Barnhardt, then was elevated to starter, and pretty much got one half of football in the program’s first game ever against a IA opponent before losing his job.

Prior to that column, Jim was a fan of BullsEYE. The next week at James Madison, he refused to take my questions in the post-game news conference. We had a one-on-one meeting in his trailer the following week to clear the air, but he never treated me the same again. We were OK, but I covered the team for several more years and he never was the same. He never let that go.

Kind of sounds like a Mike Gundy situation lol.

This is kinda funny...pretty sure they just gave Gauntt a courtesy start for all his hard work.  Had a class with some players, including Blackwell, that year.

I will never forget one of the old school posters on the Bullpen posted something. Glen “I have fallen & I” Gauntt get up” after that loss out west to SD State

I won hundred percent understand why he is holding a grudge USF. This way that whole situation went down was terrible. Also never reached out to him or even really acknowledges his contributions to the football program and  the university.

This where I get a little fuzzy with the grudge thing. Per reports here, he wanted to come back during these last 2 coaching hires so the grudge obviously wasn't with USF .... if he has one now, assume it's with those who chose a different coaching route.

This is one of the things that illustrates why I don't think he'd ever have become our "Bobby Bowden" as someone suggested.  A thing that made him a good coach, and endearing to most fans, was the emotional, putting everything into it style but you've got to know when to rein things in, dial it back and not overreact.

It didn't ruin his life, but I would expect someone getting screwed over to hold a grudge.

I think he understands that the fans appreciate all he accomplished at USF, and that he is a legend in their eyes. Certainly he is a legend in my eyes. So I don't think any of the grudge is against USF fans. Probably just against Judy since she made that decision. I doubt he his angry at our current administration since it would have been a tough call to bring him back.

Yeah, that's where I wasn't quite clear about what the op was referring to about holding a grudge. If it was Judy/Doug, totally get it ...... but if not them, just a little curious.

If he's holding a grudge NOW, it can't be for the ones who fired him but for the ones who didn't rehire him so can't buy the whole "ruined his life" reasoning ...... plus he's had a darn nice career in coaching, one a lot who enter that profession would appreciate.

Keep in mind CJL didn't actually say he held a grudge, he's probably happy doing what he's currently doing.  This is just what the poster thinks over a 5-10 minute conversation.
