Offense sells tickets, and defense wins championships ... at least that's how it used to be.  Defense is going by the wayside, and not just in college, but in the NFL too.

That's because if you hit them too hard you get a penalty and a fine

Exactly.  The rules have been bent toward offensive players in a major way.

Sorry Cali but, UofL won with just an offense. UConn won with just a Defense and we all know that WVU won a couple with just an Offense. This year, all of our contenders have good Offenses and mediocre Defenses with the exception of UC whos Defensive stats are misleading. Check their schedule ranking and teams they played. You'll find that most teams Defenses would look good against said schedule. Well, except ours. "Sigh!"

Don't say under Charlie Strong... because Ville had a decent offense but it was their defense that was doing it for them.  West Virginia had a good defense too... sorry for busting that bubble.  Look back at those years statistically... West Virginia had a top 50 defense during all of those runs in the Big East.  They had a good offense, but they also played great defense. in 2010 only 1 team mustered 20 points against them.  So it's OK to give credit to their offense, but don't misremember the team to suit an failed argument.

Washington State has always had a great offense, but it wasn't until they had a good defense  were they able to do what they're doing this year.  Because they have a good defense...

Like all things in life it's about balance.

it is about balance.  on offense you need balance and well, gilbert hasn't figured this out yet.  point- red zone offense pathetic. HBdive, HB dive, HB dive field goal.  teams know what plays he calls and stop the run, if this 65 year old woman can see that, so can any defensive coordinator.
