We're all on the Grothe bandwagon but it's not going to happen thi year.  He's redshirting.  I think we're all hoping he gets stronger and learns the playbook and comes back next year to fight for the #1.  It's going to be an ongoing battle to win the QB position at USF it seems.  That is until somebody is clearly better than the rest.  Could be Grothe next year.  And with 4 years of eligibility he'll be here for a long time.

Maybe people are forgetting just how young our QBs are... consider these lineups (leaving Gachette at DB)

2005: Julmiste, Denson, Hill, Grothe, & Severino

2006: Julmiste, Denson, Hill, Grothe, & Severino

2007: Denson, Hill, Grothe, & Severino

2008: Hill & Grothe (& Severino if he RS in '05 - '07)

2009: Grothe (& Hill if he RS in '05 - '08)

USF could potentially have their starting QBs set through 2009... and that assumes we don't get a top recruit or transfer.

And for him to mature, both physically and mentally. The redshirt (or should we call it a green and gold shirt for all the purists) year will only benefit him in the coming years. Stronger, faster, bigger. Those are the qualities he can look for. Just ask Tim Jones or Johnnie Jones about their redshirt season last year. It was hard not to play, but they both benefitted from the year to work. It will only pay off in the future for him.    Reaper

he'd likely play receiver, but is a QB talent probably up there with Denson and Hill in ability.

I'm I the only one still on the Grothe bandwagon?

MG will get his chance. Denson and/or Julmiste will see the bulk of the playing time this year. If Hill excels at WR I don't think he will stay at QB.

That means for 2006 we see another competitive QB battle between Grothe, Denson and possibly Gregory. MG will have his chance to run a BCS team in the near future and will probably work his tail off in getting the playbook down and getting stronger.

Ideally, from this point going forward it would be best if we didn't have to throw our raw but talented freshmen QBs into the lion's den right away. Not only does that mean guaranteed losses but a kid possibly getting hurt or losing his confidence.

No offense to any of the guys we have, but here would be my ideal situation:

2005:  Denson start, Hill plays some WR and QB, Grothe RS

2006:  Hill start, Denson #2, Grothe #3

2007:  Hill start, Grothe #2, New Stud QB RS

2008:  Hill gone (due to early entry in the NFL), Grothe Start, New Stud QB #2

2009:  Grothe start, New Stud QB #2

2010: Grothe , 1st round pick in the NFL, New Stud QB starts for the next two years

and so on, and so on...

Check again, it's only 5 years.  2010 Grothe would be gone, because he would be a first round draft pick.
