They're smart but they're also type A personalities with extremely high self confidence.   This is why many coaches go down with the ship (their system) rather than try to adjust what they run to their talent.  A ton of hubris comes with type A personalities

I can't stand him, but Urban Meyer adapted his offense to fit Chris Leak's strengths when he first got to Gainesville.  Did such a good job they won a natty in year 2.

To me, that's COACHING.

Benefit from (luck of the draw) talent and good front office allowed him to win as a coach. His true experiment with having virtually all control was in New York where the same type of stubbornness, as mentioned above, was exhibited. Adamant about his system and his way when he’s not even on the court and not to mention throwing everyone and their cousin under the metaphorical bus rather than taking responsibility and actually making changes to his approach...

I never said he wasn’t an a-hole.

He is arrogant as hell and a lot older now. The Knicks are a train wreck. But in his prime, he is arguably the greatest coach in NBA history. Championships don’t lie.

Yeah, he had MJ and Kobe/Shaq...but those teams weren’t winning before he took over. They called him the “zen master”, which is corny, but he brought a different perspective to coaching and leadership.

Doug Collins couldn't get it done with the Chicago Bulls. Jackson  knew how to deal with the egos and the headcases that star players have.

Meh, Skip Holtz could have coached a Kobe/Shaq team to an nba title.
