BTW,  Toewe (sp?) never really had a shot from all I've heard... great size though.

Was that pretty much it? He was just a big guy?  I seem to recall him playing some sort of "club level" football back on the continent.  Any idea why he didn't pan out? The reason I'm asking is - does this underscore the difference between club-level ball and IA football. Just curious.

Fisher Won't Return To USF; Football Team Loses Others

Published: Jul 13, 2005

TAMPA - Former University of South Florida wide receiver Brian Fisher, who encountered numerous legal and academic problems the past two years, will not play again at USF.

Fisher was named USF's offensive MVP in 2003, but withdrew from the school because of academic problems. He had said he would return in 2005 for his final season.

``Brian is not enrolled at USF and is ineligible to be a member of USF's football team,'' USF assistant AD John Gerdes said. ``He will not be back.''

Also, two reserve offensive linemen - senior Antonio Searcy (6- foot-3, 290 pounds) and freshman Marten Toewe (6-7, 310) - have left. Searcy, an underachieving defensive lineman moved to the offense in the spring, was academically ineligible, while Toewe, from Hamburg, Germany, may transfer to a smaller school.

Incoming freshman safety Jerome Murphy broke his leg playing basketball and will not enroll at USF until he's completely healed, Coach Jim Leavitt said. Murphy likely will enroll in January and not be eligible until 2006.

Murphy, of New Jersey, is the third member of USF's 23-player recruiting class who will not report next month. Plant's Donte Spires went to a junior college and Armwood's R.J. Anderson opted for professional baseball.

Leavitt said he expects USF's remaining 20 incoming scholarship players to meet college entrance requirements.

More info:

Miami Killian defensive back Antonio Cox, twin brother of Antwane Cox who signed with USF in February, is joining the team on scholarship.

The 15 new walk-ons include linebacker Trico Bellamy, a cousin and former HS teammate of Carlton Hill who earned all-conference honors as a freshman at Reedley College in California last year. His college coach said Bellamy will be on scholarship starting in January.

Defensive back Jerome Murphy might be enrolling this fall after all. He broke his leg in April playing basketball, and Leavitt will meet with him this weekend; if USF's trainers say his leg is OK, Leavitt said he'll let him enroll in the fall instead of waiting until January. Murphy also hasn't been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse yet, but mailed them documents Monday that he is confident will clear up that problem ...

That was my first thought.......that would be huge. The kid is a great athlete and could see the field as a freshman. Our WR corp has to be the deepest position on the team.....lots of athleticism and talent!

If it really pans out this way, 20 out of 23 players reporting is pretty **** good. If Jerome reports then that is 21 out of 23 with only one loss due to grades.

Still thin on D-Line and O-Line.  Toewe may not have been cutting it now but would have been nice to see if he could have developed over the next 4 years.  He IS only a RSFR.
