TAMPA, FEB. 21, 2017 – The University of South Florida baseball team takes to the road for the first time this season when it travels up to second-ranked Florida State University for a 4:00 p.m. first pitch on Tuesday.

The Bulls (2-1) are coming off a season-opening series win against Iowa over the weekend. USF outscored the Hawkeyes, 17-8, in three games, saw seven position players hit .300 or better and nine pitchers combine for 39 strikeouts.

The Bulls erupted for nine eighth-inning runs in a 9-4 season-opening victory on Friday night, then followed a 4-2 setback with an impressive 6-0 win Sunday afternoon.

The Opponent

The Seminoles (2-1) dropped their season opener at home to VCU on Friday, 3-0, but responded with a pair of decisive triumphs, outscoring the Rams, 23-6, on Saturday and Sunday.

Freshman infielder Nick Derr went 5-for-8 over the weekend with three runs scored and a double, as he’s hitting a team-best .625 heading into Tuesday. Fellow freshman JC Flowers hit .444 with three runs and two RBI, sophomore outfielder Jackson Lueck hit .417 (5-12) with a run and three RBI and junior infielder Taylor Walls hit .400 with four runs scored, three doubles and a team-high six RBI.

Notables

·   Senior Luke Borders (Winter Haven, Fla.) was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll following his productive weekend in which he hit a team-best .429, drove in six runs and team-best .429 (6-for-14) with a conference-leading six RBIs. He also tallied a run scored, a double, and a triple.

·   Junior shortstop Kevin Merrell (Odessa, Fla.) went 4-for-10 over the first two games of the weekend before walking four times on Sunday, one walk shy of tying the program record set in 2000.

·   Redshirt-freshman hurler Shane McClanahan (Cape Coral, Fla.) made his long-awaited debut on Saturday and tossed 4.0 scoreless innings of one-hit baseball while striking out nine batters.

Valdes escapes the first inning only giving up one run.  Walked 2 guys that inning and gave up a double.  Also a long fly out to the wall in center.  He needs to start pitching better for us to have a chance.

Down 2-0 after 2 innings.  Bad defensive inning, started with a walk and then error by Catcher throwing it into CF, runner advanced to third.  And then the C dropped a throw that would have had the out on the runner at home.

Still 2-0 after 4.  Valdes pulled after 3 innings.  Kind of what I thought.  This one will be pitching by committee.

Thanks for the updates.  Keep 'em coming.  I'll be home in 30 min, hopefully I can catch it on TV when I get home, if not, I'll keep it locked here.

This FSU pitcher is throwing well.  He goes mid 90s with his fastball but his changeup has been dominant.  I dont think Borders and Chatfield would touch it if they have 20 at bats against him.
