19 Home Games Highlight Men’s Basketball Schedule

Four NCAA Tournament teams will play in the Sun Dome

TAMPA, SEPT. 1, 2015 – Home games against 2015 NCAA Tournament teams Albany, Cincinnati, NC State, SMU and UAB highlight the USF men’s basketball schedule, which was released in its entirety on Tuesday.

“This is a challenging schedule for us, as five of our 13 non-conference opponents played in postseason tournaments last season,” said head coach Orlando Antigua. “Our conference has been regarded as one of the best in the country and this season will be no different with many experienced and senior-laden teams.”

The Bulls begin the season at 7 p.m. on Nov. 9 with an exhibition against Eckerd College in the Sun Dome. USF will then host Troy in the season-opening game on Nov. 13 at 7 p.m.

As previously announced, USF will host NJIT on Nov. 16. The first-ever meeting is a part of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Classic, which also includes home games against Boston University (Nov. 21) and 2015 NCAA Tournament participant Albany (Nov. 24), as well as a neutral-site contest against Kentucky, the winningest team in college basketball history, on Nov. 27 in Miami, Fla.

USF will face George Washington for the first time in 15 years on Nov. 19 in Tampa. The Colonials finished last season 22-13 while winning their first-round game in the NIT.

The Bulls will travel to Delaware for a game against the Blue Hens on Dec. 3 before playing at South Carolina on Dec. 5. The fifth-ever meeting in the series features the only two Hispanic NCAA Division I head coaches in Antigua and the Gamecocks’ Frank Martin. South Carolina returns all five starters from last season’s team which went 17-16.

NC State, which advanced to the Sweet 16 last season, comes to the Sun Dome for a game on Dec. 13. It is a return game from the one that USF lost, 68-65, last season in Raleigh.

USF hosts Jacksonville on Dec. 16 before hosting defending Conference USA champion UAB on Dec. 19. The Bulls defeated the Blazers, 73-71, in overtime in Birmingham, Ala., last season.

USF will face another 2014-15 opponent on Dec. 22, when it plays at Seton Hall.

For the second consecutive season, all American Athletic Conference teams will play an 18-game conference schedule, which includes a home-and-home with eight teams and two one-plays. USF will play Tulsa and UConn one time this season.

The Bulls open American Athletic Conference play at home against Houston on Dec. 30. Other home conference games include Cincinnati (Jan. 10), Tulane (Jan. 12), UCF (Jan. 20), Temple (Jan. 31), SMU (Feb. 7), Memphis (Feb. 20), UConn (Feb. 25) and East Carolina (March 2). USF’s conference road games are at SMU (Jan. 2), at UCF (Jan. 6), at Memphis (Jan. 16), at Houston (Jan. 23), at Tulane (Jan. 27), at Cincinnati (Feb. 4), at Temple (Feb. 14), at East Carolina (Feb. 16) and at Tulsa (March 5).

The 2015 American Athletic Conference Championship will be held March 10-13 at the Amway Center in Orlando, Fla.

USF’s Non-Conference Opponents

Troy (Sun Dome, Friday, Nov. 13, 2015)

It will be the first meeting between USF and the Sun Belt Conference school that lost its top three scorers from last season’s 10-19 team. The Trojans enter their second season with head coach Phil Cunningham. Troy returns senior forward John Walton III who averaged 8.4 points and 5.7 rebounds per game last season.

NJIT (Sun Dome, Monday, Nov. 16, 2015)

The Bulls and the Highlanders will meet for the first time on Nov. 16 and will be a part of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Classic. NJIT made noise last season when it upset No. 17/16 Michigan on Dec. 6 in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Highlanders return their top five scorers from last season’s team which went 21-12 overall. They participated in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament and advanced to the semifinals before falling to Northern Arizona, 68-61. All-American Damon Lynn returns for his senior season. The guard averaged 17.5 points per game last season and became the first player in school history to reach 1,000 career points as a sophomore (1,078). On June 12, 2015, NJIT announced it was joining the Atlantic Sun Conference after being independent the past two years.

George Washington (Sun Dome, Thursday, Nov. 19, 2015)

USF will face George Washington for the first time in 15 years. The Bulls are 1-3 all-time against the Colonials, winning the last meeting, 76-64, on Nov. 28, 2000 in the only meeting in Tampa. GW finished last season 22-13 overall, 10-8 in the Atlantic 10 Conference and defeated Pittsburgh in the first round of the NIT (60-54) before falling to Temple, 90-77. It was the second consecutive season of postseason competition for the Colonials after posting a 24-9 mark and earning an at-large bid to the 2014 NCAA Tournament. GW returns three players who started all 35 games last season, which included a win over No. 11 Wichita State. Senior guard/forward Patricio Garino returns after leading a balanced team with 12.4 points per game.

Boston University (Sun Dome, Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015)

USF and Boston University will meet in the Bulls’ second game of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Classic. USF leads the all-time series 2-1 with all three meetings coming in Tampa including the last game, a 65-49 win by the Terriers on Dec. 28, 1996. Boston is led by fifth-year head coach Joe Jones. Jones has guided Boston to a pair of postseason appearances and a regular-season Patriot League championship in 2014. The Terriers went 13-17 overall last season and return leading-scorer Cedric Hankerson (15.9) as well as John Papale (9.2), who shared team most valuable player honors.

Albany (Sun Dome, Tuesday, Nov. 24, 2015)

USF will play 2015 NCAA Tournament participant Albany for the first time in school history. The America East Conference champions were 24-9 last season and lost to Oklahoma in the first round in what was its third-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament. Will Brown has guided Albany to five NCAA Tournament berths in his 14 years as head coach. The Great Danes will return two of their top three scorers from last season in Peter Hooley (13.7) and Evan Singletary (13.0). This will be the third and final home game that is a part of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Classic.

Kentucky (American Airlines Arena, Miami, Fla., Friday, Nov. 27, 2015)

USF will play the winningest team in college basketball history on Black Friday as part of a doubleheader at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Classic. The game will precede Memphis-Ohio State at the American Airlines Arena and will be televised on ESPN. It will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs and will be the first time USF’s Orlando Antigua will face his mentor, John Calipari in collegiate competition. Antigua spent six seasons as an assistant coach under Calipari, five at Kentucky and one at Memphis. The Wildcats lost six players to the NBA Draft after going 38-1 with a loss to Wisconsin in the national semifinal. Many publications have UK with the best recruiting class in the country. USF will play in Lexington, Ky., on the Wildcats’ home floor, Rupp Arena, during the 2016-17 season.

Savannah State (Sun Dome, Monday, Nov. 30, 2015)

USF and Savannah State will meet for the first time. The Tigers went 9-22 overall, 5-11 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference last season. Horace Broadnax is in this 11th season as head coach and welcomes eight new players to his program.

Delaware (Bob Carpenter Center, Newark, Del., Thursday, Dec. 3, 2015)

USF and Delaware will meet for the first time. The Blue Hens finished last season 10-20 overall, 9-9 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Delaware returns four starters including sophomore guard Kory Holden, who averaged 12.4 points and 5.0 assists. Mote Ross is in his 10th season as head coach and ranks second all-time in victories at the school with 125. Delaware is two seasons removed from one of the best in school history with a 25-10 record and a regular season conference title in 2014-15.

South Carolina (Colonial Life Arena, Columbia, S.C., Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015)

The game pits the only two Hispanic NCAA Division I head coaches in Orlando Antigua and South Carolina’s Frank Martin. It will be the fifth meeting in the series which the Gamecocks lead, 3-1. South Carolina won the last meeting, 69-66, on Nov. 20, 2009 at the Charleston Classic despite 19 points and seven rebounds from Augustus Gilchrist. South Carolina went 17-16 last season, including a 6-12 record in the Southeastern Conference. The Gamecocks return all five starters from a balanced lineup which was led by Duane Notice’s 11.7 points per game.

NC State (Sun Dome, Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015)

This is a return game from the one that USF lost, 68-65, last season in Raleigh, which was the first-ever meeting between the two teams. The Wolfpack finished last season with a record of 22-14 and advanced to the Sweet 16. NC State lost its top four scorers from last season, but return starters Abdul-Malik Abu and Lennard Freeman.

Jacksonville (Sun Dome, Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2015)

The Dolphins return their top six scorers from last season’s team that finished with a record of 10-22. One of those losses was to USF by the score of 79-65 in the Sun Dome. Junior guard Kori Babineaux averaged a team-best 14.8 points and 4.0 assists per game last season and was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Newcomer of the Year. Like Orlando Antigua, Tony Jasick is in his second season as head coach at the school. USF leads the all-time series, 25-21, which began in 1974.

UAB (Sun Dome, Saturday, Dec. 19, 2015)

The Blazers return all five starters from last season’s Conference USA Championship team. The Blazers made noise in the NCAA Tournament last season, knocking off No. 3 seed Iowa State in the second round. All-conference guard Robert Brown is the team’s top returning scorer at 9.6 points per game. The game will be a return game from last season when USF defeated UAB, 73-71, in overtime. The Blazers, who lead the all-time series, 37-21, will play in the Sun Dome for the first time since Dec. 8, 2007.

Seton Hall (Prudential Center, Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015)

A return game for the Bulls, who lost to Seton Hall, 89-69, last season in the Sun Dome. The Pirates return eight players, including two starters from last season’s 16-15 team. Last year’s leading scorer, Sterling Gibbs, transferred out, which leaves Isaiah Whitehead as the team’s top returner. Whitehead averaged 12.0 points per game last season as a freshman guard. It will be USF’s eighth attempt to record its first win at Seton Hall. The two teams met consistently for eight years while members of the Big East Conference.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
