Manhattan College’s Steve Masiello, a high-energy, up-tempo Rick Pitino protege who just guided the Jaspers to an NCAA tournament appearance, has accepted the head coaching job for the University of South Florida men’s basketball team, according to multiple reports.
There was no immediate confirmation today from USF, which fired seventh-year coach Stan Heath following a 12-20 season.
USF retained Eastman & Beaudine, a Texas-based search firm, to identify candidates. According to a document, USF agreed to pay the firm $60,000 to search for men’s basketball candidates.
The same firm conducted USF’s athletic director search, which led to UCLA’s Mark Harlan, whose first day on the job was Monday.
Masiello, 36, was 60-39 in three seasons at Manhattan, including 25-8 this season, which ended with a 71-64 NCAA second-round loss against Louisville in Orlando.
Masiello spent the previous six seasons on Pitino’s staff at Louisville. Previously, he was an assistant at Manhattan and Tulane.
Masiello, a native of White Plains, N.Y., played at Kentucky for Pitino and Tubby Smith. He was a ballboy for the NBA’s New York Knicks when Pitino coached there.
