At what point can this not happen so he can still redshirt? I remember BJ played a bit against UT Martin when Grothe was a Junior on the 1st game of that year and then redshirted.

Game 3, but it must be for "medical" reasons.

 

 

That's not true anymore IIRC.  One play, doesn't matter when and it's burned.

According to the 2014-15 NCAA manual, a player must not play in the second half of the season, and the player can play in no more than 30% of the games in that season.

 

So, in football, if the player plays in three games or less of the first six and then obtains an injury, he may be granted a hardship waiver (what everyone calls a medical redshirt).
