What annoys me though is that this award doesn't jibe with the "preeminent" university recognition UF and FSU got after state set bogus criteria standards that were designed specifically to include UF and FSU only...they get 10s of millions extra each year that USF doesn't. Florida has 20 million residents and deserves more than 2 public "flagship" universities...USF should get extra "preeminent" money and be treated as a flagship too same as UF and FSU. Agree, and they changed the criteria of this one because USF and UCF beat UF last year.

They hold the university more accountable for progress, graduation, and job placement. Schools earned 1 through 5 points for each benchmark. UF tallied 42 points, USF 37, and FIU 34 A few more years of this, hopefully surpassing Florida, and USF will have a strong flow of academic funding (unlike Mickey Mouse U). It's surprising they aren't among the top three. We scooped all their professors out of their back yard and blew all their good majors. Just ask Smazza. Just kidding. I think it's because we have made a concentrated effort on improving our academics the past few years, while FSU has been coasting a little more and doing more on the athletic side. Tampa Bay keeps growing and there is nothing others can do to stop both USF and TB.

The original plan was to have a tiered system Tier 1 was to be the main research and doctorate universities: USF, FSU, and UF. Tier 2 was to be the "standard" regional universities: UCF, (and if i remember right) FAU, and 1 other (UNF or UWF) Tier 3 was to be the supportive or teaching universities This was the reason the tuition differential bill SB-1710 was passed listing only USF, FSU, and UF. However politics have since changed that.

On a side note, the picture that was originally posted with that article was me throwing the horns up as I walked across the stage at graduation. Looks like they changed the picture on the article though.
