Bulls Host No. 7/9 Oklahoma State on Monday Night

TAMPA – The Bulls have a chance to put themselves in the national spotlight 7 p.m. Monday when they host No. 7/9 Oklahoma State at the Sun Dome.

 

Beating the Cowboys would give USF its best victory over a ranked opponent since the Bulls won at No. 7 Georgetown, 72-64, on Feb. 3, 2010.

 

“We look at it as a challenge and we accept the challenge,” senior guard Martino Brock.

 

The Bulls are looking for their first 5-0 start to a season since 2001-02 and know accomplishing the feat won’t be easy. Oklahoma State (4-0) ranks second in the nation with 102 points per game and has outscored its opponents by an average of 40.8 points. Marcus Smart leads the way with 20 points per game after the sophomore guard scored a career-high 39 points in a 101-80 home victory over No. 11 Memphis on Tuesday night.

 

“We have to slow them down. We can’t give them transition baskets. We can’t let Smart have 30,” head coach Stan Heath said. “We just have to slow them down defensive and we need to do it as a unit. It’s not just going to be one guy; it’s not going to be two guys. It’s going to take a full unit, including guys off the bench, including guys that haven’t played just to stay engaged and help our team.”

 

Heath said rising star guard Corey Allen Jr. may match up with Smart at the start, but noted it will take a group effort to cool off the hot NBA prospect.

 

“If we just have one guy guard him that guy is probably going to have a lot of fouls,” Heath said. “It will be better to spread it around and guard him with different players in different ways.”

 

Allen put together a stellar performance on both sides of the floor in Friday’s 72-63 home win over Stetson. The former JUCO standout scored 14 of his team-high 19 points in the second half and became the first Bull with six steals in a game since Dominique Jones vs. UNC Wilmington on Nov. 22, 2009.

They don't scare me. They're good, but they're not the 7th best team in the country.

 

Granted, it's early days for RPI, but look at the records so far. Not so very different. Statistically insignificant.

Memphis is not as good as they were when they had Calipari

 

Wish I could be down there for New Years Eve. Should be a good game.
