also- for those who call this BURNING THE REDSHIRT-- technically this gives them the redshirt to use another year if needed.

I think that's often overlooked. if he is injured sometime in the next 4 years he will still be eligible to use his red shirt for what it was intended to be used for. plus if he were to use it for an actual injury then he could get a 6th year if injured again.

I don't have a problem with "blowing" a redshirt -- the whole concept was put in place to give some players a period of time to work through an injury but morphed into a method of giving them time to adjust to school and get a year older/stronger/faster. The last part is the one most people focus on and it is a completely valid method WITH ONE EXCEPTION. It is used to delay a players entry into the playing field because you have DEPTH ahead of him who is at the very least equal but usually better/more experienced than the true freshman.

 

While we did have 3 players ahead of White on the depth chart to start the year, one was a walk on (Eveld), another was a new transfer (Bench), and the other was playing lousy (Floyd). Between injuries and poor play, that lack of depth pushes the coaching staff to give it a shot.

 

Some ask "well why not do that at the start of the season?" Simple-- we didn't know that these guys would not produce in some cases (well all cases basically) and on top of that they started getting hurt. But it goes beyond that-- White was not ready because he hadn't had time to work with the offense. It isn't always about just knowing the playbook-- you needs reps running that offense. White will get all the reps they can give in this short week no doubt.

 

I would just ask our fans to be understanding of the situation and not expect great things immediately-- especially on the road against a tough opponent like Houston is looking to be. Sure-- it's easy for some to make a knee-jerk comment about how STUPID this move was or talk about getting some Juco transfers (as if that solves the problem in front of this season)--- but it simply makes no sense to me to act like this wasn't a matter of last resort.

Exactly! Last resort in that we had to go through the three guys ahead of him (would have been nice if one of them had stuck) while we were evaluating them AND while he was gaining knowledge. I think it's safe to say Floyd and Eveld are both now ruled out so we have our new 1/2 with White getting the chance at 1 to show what he can do.

This is a good discussion. Taggart made it clear in August he brings in recruits to take people's jobs, so this is in line with that mentality and in selling that plan to recruits. He's still evaluating his roster, and as long as White gets a long look rest of the way, it's good for his understanding of what he has (and needs) at quarterback. In playing White, he's also sending a message that evaluating him is more important than developing a returning QB like Floyd or Bench, who are reasonable healthy and now just a year ahead of him. It will be interesting to see how that's received.

 

Tipp mentioned 2004, and that was my first year on the beat -- notable in my memory not for playing a ton of true freshmen, but playing a ton of redshirt freshmen in key roles -- you had Ben Moffitt, Mike Jenkins and Trae Williams and Danny Verpaele all in there on a defense that didn't play well but gained crucial experience. The kids from Miami Edison played as true freshmen in 2004, Johnny Peyton jumped in too, but If anything, Leavitt was impressive in how he didn't burn redshirts on some key players in 2004 -- multi-year starters down the road in guys like Jake Griffin, Matt Huners, Marcus Edwards, Woody George. Again, Leavitt had a much different job security than Taggart does -- Leavitt could make a decision for what's best for the team in four years, while Taggart needs to think more immediately, for his own future and to keep the fans around.

All freshman that burned the RS have been playing a lot. If the assumption is that Taggart can recruit like crazy, why be upset about burning RSs?

If we put this cooking terms-- Leavitt was running that kitchen the whole time and had numerous dishes in the works and a VERY good handle on the progress of all the menu items.

 

Taggart came into a kitchen that was in disarray. He had to get rid of a rat problem, found out we were woefully low on ingredients in the cabinets, and had a bunch of spoiling food all over the place from Chef Holtz. In some cases-- we had to taste that food to see if it was edible or salvageable. Some had to be thrown out and new staff brought had to be brought up to speed on all these items as well. It could have been worse perhaps- say a kitchen fire that CWT had to deal with right away.

 

bottom line is we cannot be too fast on our fan trigger of "what the hell is going on here" -- let Chef Willie get the grill back in order. This week's Special is Cougar served with a White sauce. Enjoy.

Leavitt had been running the kitchen for years.  Taggart inherited someone else's kitchen and he's a different cook.  It doesn't matter what shape the kitchen was in, he's completely changing the menu so it requires a different set of ingredients and he doesn't know what he has to work with and what he needs to order in.

Were going to Have Coach Taggart for atleast 4 years. You cannot think our program can afford to replace a coach again so quickly. We will allow this guy to build this program. If cannot then he can go. He will need to land some big recruits in the form of offensive lineman and a qb who can succeed even with a poor team. We need that ONE kid to say I'm staying. Love the young guys playing.
