TAMPA - Starting defensive tackle Luke Sager was one of 20 Bulls named to the 2012 Big East All-Academic Team on Thursday.

To be nominated, a player had to post a cumulative grade-point index of at least 3.0 and completed at least two semesters of academic work.

The honor for Sager comes a day after he was named an American Eagle Outfitters Big East Scholar-Athlete. The award includes a $2,000 scholarship for Sager to use for his graduate studies in entrepreneurship in applied technologies.

This report from Greg, to me, is a bigger story:

Three years out of football, ex-Bull Sinclair graduates

Three years ago, defensive back Charlton Sinclair's USF football days ended when he opted to transfer to Mississippi Valley State, only to realize quickly a smaller school wasn't the answer for him.

Academic problems had limited his football success, but he decided to return to Tampa as a regular student, re-enrolling in January 2011 on his own steam and working part-time jobs to help pay for his tuition. On Saturday, he graduated with a degree in interdisciplinary social sciences, remembering that football got him started toward today.

"It was a grind," said Sinclair, who has worked at Busch Gardens, at the airport and as a valet since he stopped playing football, keeping in touch with his Bulls teammates.

Sinclair graduated from Jacksonville's Mandarin High School in 2007, but wasn't eligible to join the Bulls until January 2008, playing as a true freshman for Jim Leavitt that fall. He had five tackles, mostly on special teams, and is best-known for returning a blocked punt 27 yards for a touchdown in a 2008 loss to Pittsburgh when the Bulls were ranked No. 10 nationally (see the 0:55 mark in this video). He was academically ineligible in 2009 and was with the team when Skip Holtz became coach in the spring of 2010, but chose to transfer, leaving Mississippi Valley before the fall semester started. Football didn't last for him, but he said the lessons he learned stayed with him.

"Coach Leavitt, just being around that guy, he taught me a whole lot about life," said Sinclair, who wants to work in the justice system, perhaps as a probation officer. "He was more than a football coach. He was like the father that I didn't have growing up, teaching me about hard work."

Sinclair said his biggest motivation to stay in school was his older brother Gerrod, who played linebacker at South Carolina.

"He stayed on me pretty well, because football didn't work out for him, but he always said you can have your degree to fall back on," he said.

Congratulations Mr. Sinclair!

Thank you for sharing this story featuring Mr. Sinclair. Great work by Greg. As for honorees listed, I like seeing that the football team has honor achievers who have chosen some of the more demanding majors.
