Not "news" to many as I am sure most have seen this with the season ticket package or announced elsewhere.

It was the Trib until, what, five years ago? Then the St. Pete Times became the official newspaper further adding to the meltdown at the Trib and McMurphygate.

Greg's work and coverage seemed to match that of an "official newspaper" in terms of volume and depth. It will be interesting to see the comparison in coverage. I saw some positive comments on Joey Johnston's coverage. Hopefully we'll see great coverage and less wheeling out of the ill-informed Fennelly.

What happen to the Oracle? I guess the Oracle is the official student paper of USF.

As crappy as it has gotten USF would be better off letting it go.

Times hasn't been the official paper in years. Was when I came on the beat in 2004, but stopped in 2008.

And to be honest, it's a marketing relationship. At the Times, had nothing to do with level of coverage on the editorial side of the newspaper. Newspaper gets signage at USF venues, booth at Fan Fest, etc, and USF gets advertising in sports section.

Both papers have relationships with the pro teams in town as well.

A dedicated beat writer would help...

Agreed. We know that's not the contractual part of being the "official" newspaper. But it would be smart to leverage the marketing relationship to rebuild some readership.

Was it ever good for anything other than an easier crossword?

"There is no inherent fear among this group of players. The fear of failing drove the program from day one - the fear of failing the coaches, the fan base, the university, each teammate, themselves. Now, as we head into the biggest game in our history at home on a national stage against the highest ranked team to step on OUR field, the players are taking an introspective look at themselves. Unfortunately, I don't know if they get it. They lack the fear."
