every click on the interwebz is followed, they can tell what you clicked to get to where you are, at what point you leave a site.  This helps companies sell advertising, it also helps companies evaluate how user friendly their site is, if everyone leaves on the same page then something needs to be addressed.  A lot of times people don't want to pay that $.99 a minute for the clip so thats when they close out the window
