Source: Louisville targets Jon Gruden

Former Bucs coach is top choice if Kragthorpe is fired. National Football Post

This October 14, 2009, 07:41 PM EST

Sources at the University of Louisville have informed the National Football Post that Jon Gruden will be the school’s No. 1 choice to replace Steve Kragthorpe as head coach if Kragthorpe is fired, as expected.

The Cardinals are 2-3 heading into this week’s game at UConn. Kragthrope is 13-16 in his three years at Louisville after taking over for Bobby Petrino. Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich believes his school can compete for a national championship, and luring a coach with Gruden’s resume and experience would be a giant step in that direction.

Gruden’s brother Jay is a former Louisville quarterback and led the team to an 8-3 record in his senior season.

Jon Gruden was fired as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in January but has made a successful transition to the broadcast booth, working as an analyst on ESPN’s Monday Night Football telecasts. He is also rumored to be a candidate for the Washington Redskins’ head job if owner Daniel Snyder opts to fire Jim Zorn, whose team is off to a 2-3 start.

I don't think Gruden would want to coach college.  He shouldn't have a problem getting a coaching job in the NFL.

What the hell is the national football post and why should I believe its anonymous sources?

There is no chance - absolutely none - that Jon Gruden will ever be the head coach of the University of Louisville football team.

I heard the rumor that UL is prepared to offer Gruden around 3.6 million a year. If Gruden does coach UL it will more than likely be for the short term as I think he will help his brother Jay become the UL coach when he leaves back for the NFL. Also, another rumor is saying that Tommy Tuberville is on UL's want list. You know UL is going to go after a splash hire as they have that stadium expansion to sell more tickets. They wont take a chance on another mid major coach the next go around.

Tuberville is the more realistic choice... Besides the NFL talking heads have Gruden taking over the Redskins... Naturally thats the rumor-mill fodder...

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.

“This is not a broken football program by any means. It just needs to be united, to get everybody on the same page, share that same vision, and really to have that standard - best is the standard.”
