The key thing to understand is that there isn't an immediate deadline or urgency to this. Joyer hasn't been cleared yet, but right now, all that does is keep him from enrolling for summer classes with the other recruits. Until two years ago, nobody did this, so it's not a huge setback.

If Joyer hears back from the NCAA by Monday, he can go before the board and potentially start summer classes as scheduled. If he doesn't hear from the NCAA before Monday, he'll take two classes at HCC during the summer with the hopes of being cleared by the NCAA before the academic committee meets in August. If he is cleared and approved then, he can go to two-a-days with the team as normal and start classes in the fall.

With 11-12 scholarship offensive linemen returning and Carlos Savala and Jamar Bass joining as juniors this fall, it seemed doubtful that Joyer would have played as a true freshman, so he was likely heading for a redshirt this fall anyway.

Thanks for the update on the situation Greg.  Here's hoping it all works out.  Funny thing is when I spoke with one of the coaches about him, they loved him for his intelligence and thought that would help in him playing center.

Just an update: Joyer found out today he was cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse, according to his father Jack. Still may have to go before the academic committee, but it's a big hurdle cleared ... more on the blog at http://blogs.tampabay.com/usf.

Another step in the right direction.  At this time yesterday it looked like no hope at all.

There's not much time before classes begin and Greg's Blog doesn't have very promising news if he Kamran is not in class when the session begins.

The one thing in the blog I am puzzled by is if Kamran has to go before the Academics Committee now or not. The wording seemed to imply that he might not. Greg, a ruling please?

I don't know what the criteria is for whether an incoming athlete has to go before the committee or not. Joyer's father had been told there was a chance Kamran's GPA was solid enough he didn't need to go before the committee if he was cleared; I had understood previously that he would need to be approved by the committee.

Surely this can't be this difficult!

USF must know who has to go before the committee and who doesn't.  Why not send them to the committee as soon as you know of the need and not wait for the NCAA clearinghouse?  Apparently getting approved by the NCAA clearinghouse has little effect on USF's decisioin on whether or not to admit the athlete into USF so why wait?

USF could then let kids know that (1) you are accepted as long as you get NCAA clearance or (2) you are not going to be accepted so start looking now instead of waiting to come to us after you get NCAA clearance.

So sick.  All I've heard about on the radio the last few days here in Mobile is all these top recruits for bama and auburn who are now reporting to classes since they were just cleared by the NCAA and yet we already lost one 4 star recruit who Southern Miss had no problem signing and now at a position we need like crazy we're not only about to lose another one that would play somewhere else, but probably going to lose his brother as well.

I said this with the Thornton case.  Just wait till it hits someone in a position where we are not deep and see how you feel about this when these guys start suiting up for other programs immediately.  They're not going to wait when they can go play right away D1 somewhere else...

BC it's run by typical academics.  They have no clue outside their little world in regards to how the real world works.  It's why they don't understand the role of these football players and how they are coming to USF to "major" in a sport first and whatever their declared major is second.  Football is a BUSINESS at the university level, just look at the money these programs generate using the LABOR of these students.

Are we really so naive to believe that if USF didn't have a football team we'd still be seeing these guys come to USF specifically for a college degree vs. another school?

They are at USF for FOOTBALL the same way a student may choose it for any other major.  The "education" is second and it's hilarious if you believe otherwise.  Especially if a kid like this makes it big which is more PR for the university than any other typical academic will generate not too mention when it comes to hitting them up for money after graduation...

Would you rather our APR suffer to the point where we start losing scholarships? Yes, it sucks when we lose players to academics, but that is not the fault of the committee.

We've talked about getting back to being the toughest, most violent people out there. Let's be the best version of ourselves and really get back to the culture of how we (USF) used to step across the line and play anybody. Let's hold on to the culture of when they were tough … and they (opponents) knew it was going to be long damn day for themselves.
